                    International connections

                    For over 37 years the City of Melbourne has developed valued relationships with six sister cities around the world, as well as other important international alliances and cooperative agreements.

                    In 1978 Melbourne joined hands with the J​​​apanese city of Osaka,​ forging our first sister city partnership. Melbourne's relationship with its six siblings continues to blossom. Our multicultural communities and the city as a whole have been nourished by their influence.​​

                    • United States (Boston)

                      Melbourne and Boston are connected by a common commitment to excellence in healthcare and medicine, information and biotechnology, education, the arts and culture.
                    • Italy (Milan)

                      Sharing passions for food, fashion, sport and culture, Melbourne and Milan are natural economic and cultural partners.
                    • Japan (Osaka)

                      Melbourne's sister city relationship with Osaka, Japan encourages trade and investment opportunities for businesses in both cities.
                    • Russia (St Petersburg)

                      Melbourne's ties with sister city St Petersburg, Russia have included rich artistic and cultural exchanges over more than 25 years.
                    • Greece (Thessaloniki)

                      Melbourne's sister city relationship with Thessaloniki recognises Melbourne's large and dynamic Greek community and helps to reinforce the many similarities between these two great port cities.
                    • China (Tianjin)

                      Melbourne's sister city relationship with Tianjin fosters understanding and goodwill between the two cities and recognises contributions made by the Chinese community to Melbourne's business, culture and community life.
                    • Business Partner Cities network

                      The Business Partner Cities (BPC) network helps promote business interaction within the Asia–Pacific region, contributing to economic development of each member city.
                    • India (Strategic alliance)

                      Melbourne's engagement with India commenced when a strategic alliance with the National Capital Territory Government of New Delhi was formally acknowledged in 2008.
