Ti Martin in Conversation with John Pope: Miss Ella of Commander's Palace

Tuesday, September 20th

6-7:30PM

"I don't want a restaurant where a jazz band can't come marching through."

Meet Ella Brennan: mother, mentor, blunt-talking fireball, and matriarch of a New Orleans restaurant empire, famous for bringing national attention to Creole cuisine. In this candid autobiography, she shares her life. From childhood in the Great Depression to opening esteemed eateries, it's quite a story to tell.

When she and her family launched Commander's Palace, it became the city's most popular restaurant, where famous chefs such as Paul Prudhomme, Emeril Lagasse, and James Beard Award winner, Troy McPhail got their start.

Miss Ella of Commander's Palace describes the drama, the disasters, and the abundance of love, sweat, and grit it takes to become the matriarch of New Orleans' finest restaurant empire.

James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Ella Brennan, was born in 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. From her first job at the age of eighteen working in her brother's bar, she has spent her entire professional life in the restaurant business, with her crowning achievement being the Commander's Palace restaurant. She has two children, Ti and Alex, and still lives in New Orleans.

Jeremy soon takes the law into his own hands, sneaking the files of extremely dangerous child molesters and pursuing them on his own. While not intentional, his vigilante quest results in the deaths of three molesters all classified as homicides.

He also discovers something else, ties between the three men and a sex syndicate with Russian connections that the police aren't investigating. How can the cops claim to be keeping the streets safe when they re manipulating data and ignoring crimes?

Roulhac Toledano and Scott Veazey: Martha Wright Ambrose (1914-2000): The Rediscovery of a Southern Regional Artist

Sunday, September 25th

2-4PM

Imagine purchasing a house and finding a treasure trove of art by a single significant artist, left all but abandoned in a leaky garage. This is exactly what happened to Scott Veazey when, in 2003, he purchased the home of his lifelong friend and mentor, artist Martha Wright Ambrose. Ambrose’s work had been largely forgotten, but a chance encounter between Veazey and award-winning art and architectural historian and writer Roulhac Toledano brought revived interest in her art.

Thoroughly researching the artist’s life in interviews, published sources, and archives, Toledano and Veazey have since worked to fill in the story that is Martha Ambrose: from her formal art education at the New Orleans Art School, the Art Students League of New York, and the Cape School of Art; to her marriage and travels with fellow artist Jack Ambrose; and her career as an artist, teacher, and activist in the New Orleans community.

Painting over the course of fifty years, Ambrose, both student and teacher, remained true to herself as a representational artist, determined to “be, each day, a better painter.” Her paintings include the architecture of New Orleans and southern Louisiana, rural landscapes and waterways, as well as depictions of her worldwide travels. Rescued from certain destruction, Ambrose’s extensive body of work has since been cleaned and preserved and are presented to the general public for the first time inMartha Wright Ambrose (1914-2000): The Rediscovery of a Southern Regional Artist.
