Compiled from Japanese Demobilization Bureaux records
Japanese Operations in the Southwest Pacific Area: Volume II - Parts I and II

This series of illustrations is from a two-volume set chronicling the operations and planned actions of American and Japanese forces during World War II. These volumes focus primarily on the Southwest Pacific region of the conflict, under the American command of General Douglas MacArthur. Volume I "narrates the operations of forces under General MacArthur's command from the Japanese attack on Luzon in 1941 through the surrender in 1945" (from Foreword, by General Harold K. Johnson, page III). The Volume I Supplement deals with the period of military occupation of Japan following the end of the war (page III). Volume II, based on information obtained from Japanese officers, investigates the actions in the Southwest Pacific from the perspective of the Japanese (page III).

The two-volume set contains more than 400 illustrations, including approximately 260 maps. The small sample of 15 maps, available here, represent topics ranging from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to the planned invasion of the Japanese homeland. Also available is a single illustration (Volume II, Part II Plate 172) presenting a glossary of symbols utilized for interpretation of maps from Volume II. While this sample of illustrations is arguably biased toward certain topics, the intent was to represent the wealth of information that is available in this collection.
