Thousands across Argentina take to the streets to protest against re-re-election

Appealing to social networks thousands of Argentines Thursday evening took to the streets of the country’s major cities to protest some of the latest measures from the government of President Cristina Fernandez including the re-re-election plans and the increasing restrictions to the purchase of dollars.

Demonstrators in Buenos Aires with signs, pots and pans protest loudly

Cristina Fernandez from San Juan said protests “don’t make me nervous’

“NO to re-re-election” said the signs carried by middle class protestors marching along the streets of Buenos Aires to the historic Plaza de Mayo next to Casa Rosada, Government House while thousands surrounded the presidential residence in Olivos, in the outskirts of the capital banging pots and telling the president eight years was more than enough.

The demonstrations were organized via social networks, with a few weeks anticipation, but the massive turnout surprised political parties and leaders from the opposition and the ruling coalition.

Other major marches were reported in Rosario next to the Flag Monument, Cordoba, Mendoza, Mar del Plata, Bariloche where people protested against “the re-re-election and reform of the Constitution,” ”to defend institutions, and the right of free speech” plus demanding punishment for the officials responsible for a score of train crashes and the high criminality rates.

The re-re-election initiative is sponsored by a group of Kirchnerite intellectuals and some lawmakers, governors, ministers and mayors who are described as fundamentalist supporters of Cristina Fernandez. Although she has made no indication of supporting the initiative, the president has not stopped the campaign.

Speaking from the northeast of the country at the opening of a textile factory for Lacoste in the province of San Juan, President Cristina Fernandez said that the current protests against her administration “don’t make me nervous and won’t make me nervous” and promised to keep working actively.

“No matter where I am, I will keep doing what I always did: working actively, because I don’t know anything else since I have done this all my life, work and political militancy” she said in a rally following the opening of the factory.

During the rally in San Juan groups of young militants called for the re-re-election and held signs allusive to another four years for the president.

Cristina Fernandez took office in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011 for a second four year period. However under the 1994 constitution she can’t bid for a third period and to reform the constitution needs a special majority in Congress of two thirds in both Houses which her coalition does not have.

Another middle class motive of protest are the impediments to purchase and hold dollars or any other currency, which the government alleges needs to pay the energy bill, honour foreign debt and to have a sufficient cushion of foreign reserves of at least 45 billion dollars in the Central bank.

More specifically in Greater Buenos Aires demonstrators marched to protest a wave of killings and violent crimes, (confirmed by police stats), which has everybody scared but also furious with the passivity of authorities and the growing audacity of the perpetrators.

October next year President Cristina Fernandez faces mid term election to renew half the Lower House and a third of the Senate. Political analysts doubt the president will repeat the support of her re-election in October 2011 when she managed 54.11% of votes cast and almost thirty points ahead of her runner up. She might then be exposed to growing instability from her own ranks as a new leader makes its way up. In the US they call it the ‘lame duck’ syndrome.

Something about “Horrible leaders are to blame for crisis.”

Does that mean safer more food-secure nations like Singapore (& the U.S.) deserve CREDIT for good gov?

If they can keep this up they can make hera lame duck president. Until the mid terms, the good people of Argentina will need to endure her BS, black widow dresses and further suffering. Monthly protests like this until next year. It was impressive from the accounts of people that I know that were there, they were surprised at the turn out.

This was surprising. It seems that we still have hope.
It was a peaceful well organized protest, not like those made by thugs, rioters or those paid by sindicates.

This is a sign of good things to come. Its also good to see that people are waking up and willing to put a stop to this regime.
People did not only protest because of the re-re election, it was also because of many liberties that they have taken, the crime and insecurity on the streets, the corruption that never ends and the lies on the INDEC (Or like i call them FAILDEC)

Nonetheless i look forward to take part on another protest.

@30 Anibal speaking like that and CFKC saying she isn't scared, is likely to inflame the protesters even more. Arrogance is not going to get them out of this mess. They should be acting humble and take the complaints seriously if they want to placate the masses.

And CFKC trying her widow-woman-I-did-not-have-cancer victim stance is not going to be well received. Instead of talking about HER suffering she should be acknowledging how the people are suffering. What is she suffering from? A lack of shoes? Not having cancer? Living in a ivory tower with everything she could possibly desire?

@26 Engineer,
I was over there in San Juan recently visiting a friend who has been sent over to “that” side of Pascua-drama. Something that astonished me was the complete lack of food in supermarkets.

Here in La Serena the supermarkets are overflowing with food of every variety, but just over the border the situation is so drastically different. It is no wonder the 10s of thousands who come over here in summer go crazy in the supermarkets.

On the positive side, at least they can have a protest without the scum showing up and turning it in to a riot.

@35 Its funny you mention thatm until recently (about 2 weeks ago) there was a distinct lack of goods on the shelves. Dont get me wrong we had the basics and didnt exacly starve but about 2 weeks we went shopping and realised there was suddently a much bigger variety and much more on the shelves. It was surreal.

Its not food, its electronics. Everything is far cheeaper juts across the border. However the Argentine government is now slapping a 50% import duty on goods brought in from neighbouring countries so it will stop very soon.

So who are the real Argentine people Briton? The ones who don't support Cristina? This article talks about thousand people. The are over 40 Milliion Argentines. The President will complete her 3 more years on a high note I predict. More Industry, more work, MORE OIL !

...3 more years on a high note I predict. More Industry, more work, MORE OIL ! You must be deaf, dumb, blind and probably the ONLY person other than CFK and her minions who are too narcissistic to see reality that thinks any of those item could come to fruition while she is in power. BTW a memorandum of understanding is not a contract just the beginning of a conversation. This is the difference between a society that is involved with the world. What a stark difference with putrid northern societies where there could be mass shootings every hour and people don't give a squat, or they can take you to war under false pretenses, and the prime minister remains free and unquestioned, or where they lead you an unelected dictatorship from a superstate organization to save some bankers, and people dont move a finger.

That is the difference between engagement and being utterly pathetically moronic, dull, and supine.

Like i always say, it's amazing how hate blinds people's minds, most us know that cristina doesn't have enough majority in both chambers in order to reform the constitution, however some ignorant people continue with that idea. On the other hand, i heard yesterday the arguments of the people who were protesting in plaza de mayo, many of them criticised the denounces of corruption cases that involve c. f. k's government, which is correct, however those people always criticise only the denounces that involve her goverment, and never protest to criticise the denounces of corruption cases that involve the conservative government from the buenos aires city, these pathetic omisions show that actually those people don't care in absolut about fighting against corruption, they are just this argument, in a very despisable and hipocrite way just to criticise a government that they don't like. On the other hand, many people only insulted c. f. k, and said that her gov. is a dictatorship, and expressed also that there is not any freedom of press, however neather this time, nor in all the rest of the oportunities that people protested against the government, were repressed, beside they were transmited by the chanels that are against the governmnet and those that support it, what kind of dictatorship and lack of freedom of press are these?, they could protest with total freedom, like in all the others oportunities, beside, there was not an incident. If the oponent politic parties know how to interpreted what happened yesterday, they will have to brake with the alliances that some of them have with some powerfull corporations, and will have to build an alternative of power, otherwise those people will have to continue cacerolenado, there is a lot more to say about all this question.

Glaubitz is confident that Chevron can forge friendlier contract terms with Argentina and YPF. What’s more, the shale plays they would be looking to crack open carry far less risk (both geologic and operational) than does deepwater Brazil.

“We already know it’s one of the best shale gas reserves globally,” says Glaubitz. “Now the key is in managing the above-ground risk.” READ ON

“trying to show she is not the best....” We don't have to show that, she has done that herself, all YOU have to do is open your eyes and look, but it is amazing how many of you don't even want to do that.

You know, during the German invasion of Russia, one diplomat asked a resident of Moscow why they were fighting against the Germans, after all, as everyone knows, Stalin was a monster, deporting people, killing people at will. the woman replied “He is a monster, yes he is, but he is OUR monster”

I hope your wrong though that Congressional arithmetic rules out constitutional change; Cristina and the left should go into the midterm elections on an agressively reformist platform of updating, even refounding, the state and sweeping away the neoliberal holdovers of Menem's constitution. If this includes bringing in re-election, great; if not, I see no automatic need for a power struggle or a lame duck presidency as Cristina could just transfer her own support to her handpicked Cristinista candidate as Lula did with Dilma and Nestor did with her; I think Timmerman is the overall best bet for this role but Alicia and Kicillof are also strong contenders. And if the people feel the need for Cristina to be the leader AND the contitution hasn't changed, there are ways round that, like the resignations of 1973...

Anwser:
Because she is a wimp, a liar, incompetent and knows it is rightfully British territory. Tomorrow argentina will get censured becuase the kirchner's made argentina a deadbeat borrower. Brazil managed to come out from their shithole with help from IMF and are now the 5th largest GDP in the world.........why did argentina fail?

I hope, for your sake, that CFK stays your leader forever because while she is Argentina will remain in the sh!t state it is, unable to borrow money from the international community, and unable to exploit your own natural resources.

However for decent Argentine citizens, they deserve a decent leader who actually knows what they're doing, and Argentina may become a successful country. This will lift people out of poverty and improve their standard of living.

But you don't want that do you or you may lose your only source of income, La , and actually have to work for a living.

CAPTAIN POPPY.
It was so obvious that you were going to say about all the distortions, lies or half truths that are published about arg. in the world press. This is evident that you are just one more usefull ignorant of the conservative press. At the same time that you say that arg. is an international pariah, a few days ago it was publised an agreement between arg. and rusia, in order to explore over the arg. territory with ypf, beside, who told you that we are on the verge of being out from the g.20, let me tell you that depsite repsol's lobby, it couldn't impide the fact that there are more companies which are interested in exploring in argentina, like chevron and others, i don't know what kind of international pariah is that. On the other hand, at the same time that you say about a soposed decreasing democracy, or express that this government is authoritarian, this is evident that you don't realise about how rediculous and ignorant you are, let me tell you that a few days ago, there were huge marchs against c. f. k's gov. in different places of arg., and people weren't repress neather this time, nor in all the rest of the oportunities that people protested against the gov., in fact, the gov. doesn't repress the social protest, it represses only if there is violence between the protestors, beside, the protests were transmitted openly not only by the chanels that are against the gov., but by the chanels that support it too, i don't know what kind of dictatorship or authoritarian gov. is it. Anyway, i dont' deny that c. f. k's gov. has contradictions and negative aspects, like the denounces of corruption cases, but only an ignorant like you, can make such a mendacious and too partial analysis about argentina. There is a lot more to say about argentina's situation.
169 Captain Poppy (#) Sep 19th, 2012 - 02:38 pm Report abuse
I am far from unaware of what is transpiring in argentina. Chevron was in argentins for over twenty years and worked with YPF in the past. Nothing was contracted to do anything beyond what Chevrom was already doing. Yet they signing a memorandom to humor ass lips. Check out the last three 10qQs. Russia agreed to import gas for them....more imports....no exploration. Russia is ready to rape Argentina faster then a bolshevic.
You guys in SA toss the word “democracy” so often .....democratic union.....democratic prcocesses.....democratic protests, I think you almost belive you really have it!
I am far from a conservation and loath a socialist. If you do not like what I write........bow to your own ignorance and do not read it. It obvious that anyone that writes negative things against Argentina is a conserevative and enemy of the state. Argentina will soon own the medi anyway and nothing negative will be published internally. The last area for ass lips to conquer with be the internet. I am sure that China will show them how to achieve this.

On the other hand, if you think that soon there will be only chanels that support te government, this is evident that you don't know anything about the broadcast law that was approved three years ago, which still couldn't be applied totally for absolutly all the mediatic corporations, because of the powerfull lobby and the shamefull legal protection that the most powerull corporation of this country could get, (clarin) that's shows actually who is the owner of the power in this country.
