Information Description:La Transhumance of the Midi-Pyrenees
Transhumance has been known to take place all over the world and no where more so than in the Pyrenees Mountains of South West France.
Transhumance I the movement of sheep and cattle between summer and winter pastures to ensure the supply of feed for the animals. In the Midi-Pyrenees region, Transhumance takes place in both the Pyrenees Mountain areas and also the Aubrac area of the Aveyron department.
These days, the Transhumance has become a celebration, with fetes and fairs held on the same days as the herds are moved. The animals are usually moved to the higher ground in late May or early June and brought back to the valley farms around September time.
The whole event is a friendly social gathering and walkers are always welcome to join the Shepard’s as they move their animals.
