    Australia’s Top 50 Small Towns

The results are in — our month-long contest has located the most irresistible, exotic, historic and postcard-worthy small towns in Australia.

It’s no surprise that some of the country’s most populated states, like New South Wales and Victoria, are home to a large number of the coolest hidden gems of the Land Down Under. However, less populated areas, like the far reaches of Western Australia and Tasmania, earned places on our list for their surprisingly huge selections of towns with out-of-this-world coastal scenery, rugged wilderness and small town hospitality.

It’s easy to marvel at the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s beaches backed by skyscrapers, but travelers who only explore Australia’s largest cities are missing out on what truly makes the country tick. It’s Australia’s small towns and villages that showcase the country’s diverse culture, from the dry, dusty Outback to the rugged wilderness of Sorell and Beauty Point, Tasmania.

We searched all of Australia’s nooks and crannies for the most alluring towns, rich in culture, mouthwatering eats, local wines, World Heritage Sites, picture-perfect scenery, funky shops and tree-lined streets. You can find the complete list arranged by region below.
