Written and directed by Leena Yadav, Parched is a story of four rural women in Rajasthan, who are fighting for their identity in a patriarchal society. Starring Tannishtha Chatterjee, Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla and Lehar Khan, the film tackles issues like child marriage, domestic violence, loneliness and prejudice against working women. The film's script keeps you hooked and performances by lead characters leave a mark on your psyche.
Actress Radhika Apte, who plays a rural woman struggling to get pregnant in Parched, said that her character was nothing like she has done before and hence it was very challenging. "The beauty of how she (director Leena Yadav) has carved the character is that because she (the character) thinks she is worthless, so she is reckless. She talks about whatever she wants to talk about and does whatever she wants to do as she has nothing to lose. And that makes her a very joyous person. So there's a beautiful contradiction there and a beautiful character sketched by Leena," said Radhika.
Parched actress Radhika Apte says there are lesser incidents of casting couch nowadays since actresses are saying no. "The casting directors also have an organised way," she added.
Parched is not about water, director Leela Yadav clarifies. "Parched is for thirst of liberation, freedom and love," she added.
Kajol says that Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla and Tannishtha Chatterjee "became their characters" in Parched, so much so that she couldn't tell who's who. "They became these women from Kutch," she said. Parched is produced by her husband Ajay Devgn.
