Individual Membership

Individual members of the Society for Ethnomusicology receive free copies of the journal Ethnomusicology and the SEM Newsletter. They have the right to vote and to participate in the activities of the Society, as well as to submit papers for inclusion in SEM annual meetings and in regional chapter meetings. Members have access to Members' Area resources, and they receive discounts on publications. Members are also encouraged to affiliate with the regional chapters of the Society.

SEM memberships correspond to the calendar year, from January 1 to December 31. By renewing on time, you will save SEM extra mailing costs and ensure that you receive all of your publications without delay!

Institutional Membership

Institutional members receive copies of the journal Ethnomusicology and SEM Newsletter.

Additional Information on Individual Membership Benefits

SEM Website Members' Area
Sign in to the SEM website with your username and password to access the Members' Area of the site. Here you can access and edit your member profile, search the Membership Directory, read the SEM Newsletter, view job announcements in the Career Center, and access member discounts and other information. Signing in first will also allow you to retrieve your current membership information when renewing your membership. If you are joining SEM for the first time, you will be able to access the Members' Area after your membership is processed (generally within two days).  

Edit Your Profile in the SEM Membership Directory
Sign in to the SEM website with your username and password to edit your profile in the SEM Membership Directory. Select "Manage Profile” and "Edit Bio.” Update your postal address and email address to ensure that you will receive the journal, newsletter notices, and other SEM communications. Edit your Research Interests to connect with other members.

SEM Member Access to Ethnomusicology via JSTOR (included in SEM membership dues)
SEM members have electronic access to the journal Ethnomusicology (from 2006 to the current issue) through JSTOR's Current Scholarship Program. After purchasing your membership, you will receive an email from JSTOR with instructions and a password. Please allow two weeks from the date of purchase to receive the JSTOR email.

SEM Member Access to the Backfile of Ethnomusicology via JSTOR ($10 additional fee)
Individual access via JSTOR to the journal Ethnomusicology (from 2006 to the current issue) is included in your SEM membership. For an additional $10 fee, SEM members may obtain individual access via JSTOR to issues of the journal back to 1953. This option may be of interest to members who do not have JSTOR access through their home institution. After purchasing backfile access, you will receive an email from JSTOR with instructions and a password. Please allow two weeks from the date of purchase to receive the JSTOR email.

SEM Member Discount for New JSTOR JPASS
JSTOR is now offering JPASS--a personal access plan to a digital library of more than 1,500 academic journals. JSTOR's one year rate for SEM members is $99 (a 50% discount from the listed price) and includes unlimited reading and 120 article downloads. For details, please sign in to the SEM website and select Members' Area / Member Discounts. Please note that JPASS is a plan separate from SEM members' access to Ethnomusicology in JSTOR through the above Individual Access program.
