ABOUT CHUCK HANSEN

ABOUT U.S. CLASSIFICATION

Welcome to the uscoldwar.com web site. The purpose of this web site is to provide you with information about Chuck Hansen's history of the post 1945 U.S. development of nuclear weapons--The Swords of Armageddon. You are embarking on a voyage of discovery through information about one of the "blackest" military weapons programs ever instituted by the United States.

A relatively recent change is a new method of delivery. Instead of purchasing the volumes as pdf on CD-ROM, you can download the pdf files from a Box.Net  file on the internet. And at significantly lower prices.  See information under pricing.

There are two other recent changes. The first is that I again am accepting charge cards for payment. I am doing this through Pay Pal. Instructions are on the ordering page.

The second is that I know that many readers are interested in very specific weapons systems rather than an entire volume or the entire set. To help such readers I have divided Volume 5 into parts and have posted them in a file at Box. You can access that file from the Table of Contents. Each part starts with the same 10-11 pages, but the body of the part is on a different subject.

Chuck Hansen's first version of his opus on this subject was published in late 1995 as a set of eight (volumes) Adobe Acrobat PDF files on CD-ROM. Chukelea Publications is now taking orders for Swords of Armageddon Version 2, the long awaited, updated, revision of Swords. Swords of Armageddon Version 2 consists of seven volumes now instead of eight. Volume I consists of the material that was previously in Volumes I and II.

Chuck Hansen presented a paper entitled "A Hindenburg in the Bomb Bay: The Transition from Liquid to Solid Fueled Thermonuclear Weapons, 1951-1954" "at the Second Los Alamos International History Conference co-sponsored by the Los Alamos Historical Society and the University of New Mexico at Los Alamos between August 9 and 12, 1998. The abstract of Mr. Hansen's paper follows:

Early U.S. thermonuclear war plans were based on the availability of large liquid-fueled weapons and all their attendant encumbering cryogenic apparatuses. A Hindenburg in the Bomb Bay explains the transition in U.S. Air Force planning and logistics for the replacement of liquid-fueled hydrogen weapons by solid-fueled devices. The objectives and results of both Nevada and Pacific Ocean proof tests of early thermonuclear weapons and their components are also described.

During the first years after the publication of the Swords of Armageddon version 1.0, Chuck wrote an approximately semi-annual review of books published and available to the public that might be of interest to fellow researchers. These were called The Cutting Edge and the collection of them can be found in a box.net folder at http://www.box.net/shared/6eijjdf6t2q9t3hx34n6

THE CHUCK HANSEN  DOCUMENT COLLECTION

Chuck’s vast collection of documents and papers was donated to the National Security Archive, an independent non-governmental research institute and library located in the Gelman Library at the George Washington University in Washington D.C. Ninety boxes of material were packed and shipped to the Archive during the summer of 2003. As of July, 2007, about 70% of the documents had been processed, with a detailed inventory created. When the inventory is completed it is planned that it will appear on the NSA website.

According to NSA Director William Burr, anyone who wants to look at the processed portion of Chuck Hansen’s collection (or any other collection at the NSA – check their website) should contact Ms. Mary Curry, the NSA’s Public Service Coordinator. She can be reached at 202-994-7000 or nsarchiv@gwu.edu.

Anyone wishing to look at the collection should give Ms. Curry at least one week notice (more time would be better). The NSA reading room is small and can get crowded so scheduling is very important. Up to five boxes can be ordered at a time.
