Founder and president of the Ennahdha (Renaissance) Party in Tunisia

He is one of the world’s leading Islamic intellectuals and one of the most influential Tunisian politicians in the post-revolution transition period. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death under Bourguiba and Ben Ali’s regimes. With the fall of President Ben Ali in January 2011, Ghannouchi returned to Tunisia after spending 20-years in exile. He led the Ennahda Party to victory in the October 2011 National Constituent Assembly elections. He also serves as the Assistant Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.
