Summary
Controversy marred the final day of far-right French Presidential candidate Marine Le Pen's visit to Lebanon when the grand mufti declined to meet her after she refused to don a veil.
Le Pen said she had informed Grand Mufti Abdel-Latif Derian's staff that she would not wear a veil as requested.
At the conference, Le Pen said the protesters were mistaken.
However, she added that "the worst thing that could happen in Syria, that would facilitate it falling into the hands of Daesh, would be the destruction of the Syrian state".
Despite the controversy that followed her visit, Le Pen also thanked Lebanon for its hospitality and spoke of maintaining and deepening strong ties.
Le Pen is the second French presidential candidates to visit Lebanon with centrist Emmanuel Macron making a two-day visit in January.
