UN: Report on sexual abuse paves way for meaningful reform

In response to UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ annual report on special measures for protection from sexual exploitation and abuse, issued today, Amnesty International’s Senior Crisis Response Adviser Joanne Mariner said: “UN Secretary-General António Guterres rightly recognizes that sexual abuse by UN peacekeepers and other UN personnel is a cruel and inexcusable wrong that soils the reputation of the United Nations as a whole.

Yemen: Saudi Arabia-led coalition uses banned Brazilian cluster munitions on residential areas

Amnesty International has corroborated new evidence the Saudi Arabia-led coalition recently fired Brazilian-manufactured rockets containing banned cluster munitions striking three residential areas and surrounding farmland in the middle of Sa’da city, injuring two civilians and causing material damage. The attack, which took place at 10. 30pm on 15 February 2017, is the third confirmed use of Brazilian-manufactured cluster munitions documented by Amnesty International in the last 16 months.

Thailand: Prioritize the amendment and passage of legislation on torture and enforced disappearances

Amnesty International and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) regret the decision of Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly (NLA) to further delay the passage of essential legislation criminalizing torture and enforced disappearances. Our organizations call on the Thai government to cease its stalling measures and instead prioritize the amendment of the Draft Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act (Draft Act) in order to bring it into line with international law.

Sudan: Further Information: Three human rights defenders freed

Three human rights defenders Khalafalla A. Mukhtar, Midhat A. Hamdan and Mustafa Adam have been released after being sentenced to time served by a court in Khartoum, Sudan. The three, who were released on 6 March, had been in detention since their arrests on 22 May 2016. Earlier in January, the court dropped all charges against Arwa Elrabie, Al Hassan Kheiry and Raye Imany Leyla.

Hungary: Legal amendments to detain all asylum-seekers a deliberate new attack on the rights of refugees and migrants

Amnesty International regrets the adoption of the latest comprehensive set of amendments to Hungarian asylum laws in the National Assembly on 7 March 2017. The amendments to five different laws , if signed into law by the President and proclaimed in the official journal will lock up all asylum-seekers in border “transit zones” for the whole duration of their asylum process, including any appeals, as well as enable the push-back (summary expulsion) of all persons found in an irregular situation in Hungary to the external side of the country’s extensive border fences.

Iran: Repression of those seeking truth and justice for 1980s killings needs to stop

In this joint statement, 20 human rights groups call on the Iranian authorities to stop the harassment, intimidation and prosecution of human rights defenders seeking truth and justice on behalf of individuals who were summarily executed or forcibly disappeared during the 1980s and their families. Over the past few months, several human rights defenders have been subjected to harassment, reprisals or prosecution on vague national security-related charges for their peaceful efforts to learn the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones.

Belarus: Reprisals against participants in recent peaceful rallies

Thousands of people joined peaceful street rallies under the slogan “My nie darmoyedy!” (“We are not spongers!”) in Minsk, Homel, Vytebsk and other cities and towns across Belarus between 17 and 26 February. Contrary to common practice in recent years, the rallies had not been expressly authorised in advance by the authorities but were still allowed to proceed, in central locations, by the police.

Indonesia: Government must investigate Wilmar labour practices as company attempts to cover up abuse claims

Agri giant Wilmar’s campaign to cover up labour abuses exposed in a damning Amnesty International report is being aided by the Indonesian government’s failure to investigate claims against the palm oil company. Despite reports that the authorities would create a special task force to probe human rights abuses detailed in the report, ‘The Great Palm Oil Scandal: Labour Abuses Behind Big Brand Names’, no progress has been made.

Nepal: Investigation urgently needed after security forces shoot protesters dead

Nepal’s authorities must promptly investigate the security forces who opened fire on a crowd of protestors in Saptari district in the Tarai, Nepal’s southern plains, killing three people and injuring 16, Amnesty International said today. “This was an unlawful use of lethal force. There must be a prompt, effective and impartial investigation, and those responsible must be held accountable,” said Aura Freeman, Amnesty International’s Nepal campaigner.
