Facebook to use drones, satellites to deliver Internet
Facebook is using satellite, drone and other technology as part of
an ambitious and costly effort to beam Internet connectivity to people in underdeveloped parts of the world.
The world’s No 1 social network said on March 27, 2014 it has hired aerospace
and communications experts from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and its Ames Research Center for the new “Connectivity Lab” project.
“Today, we’re sharing some details of the work Facebook’s Connectivity Lab is doing to build drones, satellites and lasers to deliver the
internet to everyone,” Facebook Chief Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook. He did not specify a time frame.
The move extends the social networking company’s Internet.org effort,
aimed at connecting billions of people who do not currently have Internet access in places such as Africa and Asia. Facebook has been
working with telecommunications carriers to make Internet access more available and affordable.
Facebook envisions a fleet of solar-powered drones as well as low-earth orbit and geosynchronous satellites delivering Internet access to
different regions of the world. Invisible, infrared laser beams could allow Facebook to dramatically boost the speed of the Internet
connections provided by the various aircraft, Facebook said on a Web page that explaining the project. |

Facebook launcing
Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his Harvard dormitory room on February 4, 2004. The idea for Facebook came from his days at Phillips Exeter Academy, which, like most colleges and prep schools, had a long-
standing tradition of publishing an annual student directory with headshot photos of students, faculty and staff known as the "Facebook".
Zuckerberg moved to Palo Alto, California with Moskovitz and some friends and got a small office.They got their first new office during the summer of 2004. In August 2004, Zuckerberg, Andrew McCollum , Adam D'Angelo and Sean Parker launched a competing peer-to-peer file sharing service called Wirehog. It was a precursor to Facebook Platform applications.
On May 24, 2007, Zuckerberg announced Facebook Platform , a development platform for programmers to create social applications within Facebook. Within weeks, many applications had been built and some already had millions of users. It
grew to more than 800,000 developers around the world building applications for Facebook Platform. On July 23, 2008, Zuckerberg announced Facebook Connect, a version of Facebook Platform for users. /p>
Criminal investigation
In June 2010, Deputy Attorney General Muhammad Azhar Sidiqque of Pakistan launched a criminal investigation into Zuckerberg and Facebook co-founders Dustin
Moskovitz and Chris Hughes after a "Draw Muhammad " contest was hosted on Facebook. The investigation also named the anonymous German woman who created the contest.

Facebook CEO $100M donation
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced September 24, 2010 the creation
of a new foundation called Startup: Education. Zuckerberg is seeding the foundation with the "initial gift" of $100
million to the Newark, N.J. school system.
"I feel very fortunate for the opportunities I've been given because of
my education, including the chance to work with talented people and build a great company at such a young age," Zuckerberg said
in a blog post. "Rather than waiting until later in life to focus on giving back, I've spent a lot of the last year researching and looking
for the most impactful ways to improve education starting in America."

A movie "The Social Network" released on October 1, 2010 detailing the creation of Facebook and Zuckerberg's
rise to fame and fortune. According to published reports, the movie doesn't exactly paint the Facebook founder in an entirely
positive light. After Zuckerberg was told about the film, he responded, "I just wished that
nobody made a movie of me while I was still alive."

Facebook Credits enables fast and easy transactions across games on the
social networking site and would benefit about 2.5 crore Facebook subscribers in the country.
The users would be able to enter their payment information once and can buy, earn and spend safely across various games or applications they use
on Facebook. "Starting July 1, we will require all social game developers on the Facebook canvas platform to process payments through Facebook Credits,"
Facebook Platform Marketing Manager Deb Liu wrote on the company''s official blog in January.
This will also help various brands, which use the medium of Facebook to retail them goods through their social pages.
"Facebook Credits is currently used in more than 350 applications from
150 developers, representing more than 70 per cent of virtual goods transactions volume on
Facebook," Liu had said. Facebook Credits would also offer incentives such as early access to product features, premium promotion on Facebook, premium targeting for
ads and access to new co-promotion opportunities. Many developers such as Zynga, Playfish, CrowdStar, Digital Chocolate,
PopCap and Arkadium have already adopted Facebook Credits for in-game virtual goods.
Facebook boosts antivirus offerings to users
Facebook has announced on July 11, 2012 that it is boosting antivirus offerings to its users, according to a report.
Facebook is directing people to its new malware 'checkpoints' if users suspect their computers have been infected with a virus. Through a self-enrollment system, users can access free antivirus
programs from McAfee or Microsoft. The company said that the new checkpoints allow users to be more
proactive, The Los Angeles Times - reports. "Previously, if you suspected you may have malware installed on your
device, you would either need to run anti-virus on your device or wait until Facebook identified an actionable threat," the company said in a post.
"Now, with our new self-enrollment malware checkpoint, you will be able to proactively obtain your choice of a free anti-virus product to scan
and clean your system. Facebook had created an "antivirus marketplace" in early 2012 where
users could download trials of security software. The company also developed a system to notify users if their machines had become infected. |
