MINSK, 7 April (BelTA) – Belarus is extremely concerned about the escalation of tensions in Syria, reads an official commentary by the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BelTA has learned.

“The Belarusian side is extremely concerned about the escalation of tensions in Syria. We stress the need for unconditional compliance with international law and believe that unilateral actions unauthorized by the UN Security Council are unacceptable,” the commentary reads.

The ministry called on the parties concerned to take effective measures to de-escalate the conflict and continue searching for ways to settle it through negotiations.

“Any accusations of the use of prohibited means of warfare should be corroborated by competent reports of UN agencies, specifically the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. We expect to see reports with clear evidence regarding the use of chemical weapons in Idlib province of Syria from this agency,” the ministry stressed.

It was noted that Belarus, as an active participant in the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, reaffirms its consistent position that any use of chemical weapons anywhere, by anyone, under any circumstances is unacceptable. All such cases must be fully investigated and those responsible brought to justice.
