Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation

Joseph F. McCrindle (1923-2008) was a distinguished art collector as well as an editor and publisher. After graduating from Harvard University in 1944, he served as a translator with the Office of Strategic Services in London. He then attended Yale Law School and worked briefly as a Wall Street lawyer and at publishing companies in London and New York before becoming a literary agent. In 1959, to fund the Transatlantic Review, he established the Henfield Foundation — later renamed the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation — which went on to support arts, music, and social justice organizations including the National Gallery of Art, the New York Youth Symphony, and Doctors Without Borders. The foundation recently endowed the Henfield Prize, an annual award for students in creative writing programs, at five universities: the University of California–Irvine, Columbia University, the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, and the University of Virginia.
