What is HD and how do I receive these channels?

HD gives you exceptionally clear, crisp pictures with vivid colours and up to five times more detail than standard definition.

Only a high definition television, high definition digital box and high definition broadcast used together to provide high definition viewing.

Viewers will also be able to catch-up on HD programmes from these channels on BBC iPlayer.

For Freeview and BT TV, you will need an aerial, for Freesat and Sky you'll need a satellite dish installed outside your home and for Virgin media, you'll need a cable connection.

Contact your service provider if you are unsure if the BBC's HD channels are available on your platform.

To watch programmes in HD, you will need the following:

  • An 'HD Ready' TV.
  • An HD Receiver (a digital box that is designed to receive HD)
  • An HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable to connect the receiver to the HD Ready TV.
  • An HD TV with built-in Freeview HD or Freesat HD.
  • An aerial, satellite dish or cable connection (from an HD service provider).

If you have an ‘HD Ready' TV You will still need the right kind of receiver, which will be included in the digital box from your HD service provider, whether satellite or cable.

We can make no guarantees that particular boxes will work with the BBC's transmissions. Consumers need to ask their retailer or supplier whether receivers are compatible before they buy.
