So you’re unaffiliated. You want to use JSTOR, but you’re not part of a school or participating institution or an organization in a developing country and your public library doesn’t offer access. We can help! The products below are in a range of free to affordable. 
Register and Read

By registering for a MyJSTOR account, you can read three articles every two weeks.
To register you will need to:
  1. create a username and password
  2. provide an email
  3. provide your name
There will be an opportunity to keep yourself logged in and to sign up for news items from JSTOR and/or JSTOR-participating publishers. To opt-in to any of those, you'll need to check the corresponding checkbox. You can start on the registration page
Once you’re registered, go crazy! Find an article you want. Whether or not you’re logged in, you’ll a series of buttons to the right of the citation information. If the article is part of Register and Read (our free program), you’ll see a “Read Online (Free)” button. 
Once you press the "Read Online (Free)" button you'll get a box prompting you to add the article to your shelf. On the left hand side, push the button that says "Add To Shelf."
You'll then be taken to your shelf where you'll be asked if you really want to add the article. Press "Add To Shelf" and read away!
Once you add content to your shelf, you'll be able to view it as full-text page images. You can always come back to the shelf portion of your MyJSTOR account to find the articles you've saved there. 
To remove an article from your shelf:
Sign in and go to the shelf portion of your MyJSTOR account. Scroll down to the article you want to remove.
Please note that you will only be able to remove an article after its been on your self for fourteen days. You'll know that you can remove it when you a button appears beneath the article description that says "Remove From Shelf"
PDF versions of some articles will also be available for purchase and download. If you purchase articles from your shelf, the PDF versions may be stored and accessed in your MyJSTOR account at any time. 
How to change the details of your account:
Go to the My Profile portion of the MyJSTOR dropdown menu. The drop-down menu is found in the upper left hand corner of the screen. (It's the fourth option from the left.) Clicking on "My Profile" will take you to an editable form where you can change your name, email address, password, country, state, institution, academic status, etc. You will also be able to opt in to JSTOR mailings. 
How to delete your account:
If you decide you don't want your account anymore and would like us to shut it down/burn it to the ground, pleasecontact us and we'll take it from there.

Approximately 1,000 journals also have single articles or issues for sale through JSTOR. Fees for those articles represent a price set by the publisher plus a flat fee to cover JSTOR’s costs for providing the service. Please contact JSTOR Website Support with any questions about this program.  
Issues and articles offered for sale will appear with a Download button, citing a specific price. Like this: 
When you find an article you want to purchase, the option will be available to the right hand side of the article page. Once you press the download button, you'll get a pop-up window. On the left hand side, you'll find two links, one for purchasing the individual article and another for the full issue. The right hand side of the pop-up outlines the process. 
You'll need to sign into your MyJSTOR account to continue with your purchase. From there, add the article or issue to your cart and continue through PayPal (if you're unsure how to do that we have the steps outlined in the JPASS section.)

If you’re here, chances are you’re a little hazy on what to do after purchasing an article on JSTOR. Where is it? Is the stork dropping it off or…? 
Never fear, the answers are here!
Go to www.jstor.org and make sure you’re logged in. To check, look in the upper right corner. It should say, “Welcome Firstname Lastname.” If it doesn’t, just click Login in the upper right corner and log in to your account.
Go to your Purchase History. To get there, hover your cursor over the MyJSTOR tab at the top of the page and choose “Purchase History” from the dropdown menu.
Click on the article title in the Purchase History list to be taken to the article. 
Once you're at the article page, click the blue “Download PDF” button. The article will appear in a new window. The first page is the cover page, so be sure to scroll down to see the actual text of the article. At this point, you can save the document to your computer, print it, close it – go nuts!
To be super clear, you won't be getting a paper copy of your article from us. We request a mailing address when you purchase your articles because our webshop processes orders for subscriptions to journals published by Indiana University Press, which sometimes include print issues. 
Will I lose access to articles I purchased and downloaded?
Nope! You will have permanent access to downloaded PDFs through your MyJSTOR account.  They can be downloaded to your mobile device or desktop at any time.

JPASS includes the archives of all the journals listed in the JPASS Collection which represents approximately 83% of the journals on the JSTOR website. Content not in the JPASS Collection includes scholarly books, primary sources, the most recent issues of some journals, and, in some cases, journal archives. Some of this unavailable content may be found via Register & Read, for purchase as an individual article, or through an interlibrary loan from a JSTOR-participating library. If you wonder whether something is or isn't in the JPASS collection, you can check the list on the JPASS website.

How to buy a JPASS:
When you get to your shelf, if you've put things on it, you'll see the below ad. From there you can choose your package and make your way to PayPal. 
If you don't have anything on your shelf, no problem. You can click "JPASS Downloads" from the same menu. It will take you to this page.
Once you choose a plan, you'll be presented with a check out screen. Be sure to check the box that allows you to accept our Terms and Conditions. From there you'll be taken to PayPal.
Once you're at PayPal, you will need to sign in as a guest (click 'Pay with Debit or Credit Card') or use your existing PayPal account. 
After you've logged in and confirmed your method of payment, you'll have to confirm your purchase.
Once you hit that purchase button, you should have your JPASS. You can start browsing! Follow this short tutorial for tips and tricks on how to use your new JPASS:

Single article or issue purchases:
We do not offer exchanges or refunds for single articles or issues purchased through this service. All purchases are considered final. That said, if something unexpected happened, please let us know
It's worth noting that JSTOR contains reviews as well as full-length articles. Reviews do not contain the original content of the works they review. Double check that you found the thing you actually wanted before purchasing anything. 
JPASS access plan purchases:
The 1-year JPASS plan is refundable within two weeks of purchase if no more than 10 downloads are used during that time. Simply contact JSTOR Support to let us know you'd like a refund.
Please include the following information when you contact us:
1. Your name and preferred contact information
2. The PayPal Transaction ID for your JPASS purchase
3. The reason for your refund request
Upon receipt, we'll review your request to verify that the terms of the policy are met and issue a full refund in the original form of payment. Refund requests received more than 14 days following purchase will not be eligible.
Please note the 1-month JPASS plan is not eligible for a refund.
