Who knew that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner had such an appreciation for fine art? Well, apparently not Kushner’s required financial disclosures, according to artnet News. The couple have a collection of art in their home reportedly worth millions, with works by Dan Colen, Alex Da Corte, Louis Eisner, and more. Unlike other senior members in the White House, including Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Kushner failed to include these works of art in his disclosure.
Kushner’s lawyer told artnet News via a statement from the White House that the works of art in the Kushner-Trump house are for decorative purposes only, not investments. Still, he said that Kushner will add them to an upcoming version of his financial disclosure. “Mr. Kushner and Ms. Trump display their art for decorative purposes and have made only a single sale,” he said. “To avoid any doubt, however, they will report their art collection.”
According to the Office of Government Ethics, art that is held for investment purposes and worth more than $1,000 must be disclosed. “One can conclude that there is an investment purpose if there is regular activity of selling or buying pieces of artwork,” Washington ethics lawyer, Robert Walker, told artnet News. “A single sale does not necessarily mean that Kushner will need to disclose his art assets.”
Ivanka Trump has spoken repeatedly about the collection to the press as well as shown it on social media, sometimes using her brand’s logo to watermark the photos. In 2013 she told Artsy, “[Jared and I] only have two rules: we don’t buy art that we don’t love and we only buy something if we BOTH love it and want to live with it.”
Kushner and Trump may not be hiding anything within their personal art collection, but that doesn’t mean their critics will let them be. In a 2015 Instagram photo, Ivanka posed in her hallway in front of a framed piece by Alex Da Corte. Da Corte left a comment: “Please get my work off of your walls. I am embarrassed to be seen with you.”
