Israel Prehistoric Society / העמותה הישראלית לפרהיסטוריה

 The Israel Prehistoric Society (IPS) was established in 1960 as an initiative of Prof. Moshe Stekelis, its first chair. The goals of the IPS are to investigate, teach, and propagate knowledge of prehistoric archaeology in Israel. One of the Society's major aims is to strengthen the ties between professional and academic prehistorians, avocational prehistorians, and the wider public. Thus, IPS members include academics from all the relevant scientific institutes as well non-professionals from all over the country. The Society enhances cooperation and collaboration with research institutes in Israel and abroad. To achieve these goals, the IPS holds an annual meeting dedicated to the presentation of recent excavation results and new studies in the prehistory of the southern Levant. The IPS publishes annually an international scientific Journal, Mitekufat Heaven: Journal of the Israel Prehistoric Society, a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to current and innovative prehistoric research in Israel and the southern Levant.

העמותה הישראלית לפרהיסטוריה נוסדה בשנת 1960 (תש"ך) בשם "הקרן לחקירות פרהיסטוריות בישראל" ביוזמת פרופסור משה שטקליס, היו"ר הראשון. מטרות העמותה הישראלית לפרהיסטוריה הן לעסוק בהעמקה, הדרכה, הסברה והפצת מידע בתחום הפרהיסטוריה בישראל, ולחזק את הקשר בין אנשי מקצוע לחובבים החברים בעמותה. בהתאם, העמותה מאגדת חוקרים מכל מוסדות המחקר האקדמאיים בישראל כמו גם מתעניינים וחובבים מרחבי הארץ, במטרה לקדם את המחקר הפרהיסטורי ולהפיץ את המידע בקרב הקהל הרחב. העמותה מעודדת שיתוף פעולה עם מוסדות מחקר בארץ ובחו"ל כדי לקדם השגת מטרות אלה. העמותה מקיימת כנס שנתי המוקדש לחפירות ומחקרים חדשים הקשורים לפרהיסטוריה של ישראל והלבנט. העמותה מוציאה לאור את כתב העת השנתי הבינלאומי מתקופת האבן: כתב העת של העמותה הישראלית לפרהיסטוריה המשמש במה לפרסומים מדעיים חדשניים בתחומי חקר הפרהיסטוריה בישראל ובלבנט.
