The Role
This is a unique opportunity for a strategic individual to support a dynamic and growing organizations that, through delivery on our mission, is having a transformative impact on the scholarly communications landscape.
The Ithaka International Associate Director, IPSP in Western Europe will work remotely, likely from a home office location in Western Europe, and will liaise with ITHAKA’s Associate Vice President, Institutional Participation and Strategic Partnerships, who is located in New York City.
The primary responsibilities of the Ithaka International Associate Director, Institutional Participation and Strategic Partnerships are:
1. Promotional and relationship development activities to facilitate mission-driven new participation in Western Europe, to help ITHAKA meet the participation expectation of the organization for JSTOR, Artstor and Portico;
2. Enhance ITHAKA’s strategic relationships with key participants in that region, as well as to identify and help to cultivate new mission-oriented opportunities for new product and market development.
Specific Objectives and Responsibilities
Success in this role will be determined by how well you: develop and enhance ITHAKA’s strategic relationships in the academic community; help the organization achieve annual participation goals, and; represent ITHAKA formally and informally at events throughout the region.
Promotional Responsibilities:
- Develop and enhance ITHAKA’s strategic relationships among leaders within the library and administration of participating institutions and consortia in the higher education community in Western Europe;
- Communicate effectively with ITHAKA’s outreach and marketing teams to coordinate and direct activities in support of annual participation goals;
- Advise on planning outreach strategies to facilitate participation growth consistent with ITHAKA’s strategic growth and sustainable objectives;
- Organize and execute strategic discussions with leaders in the academic library community to build the ITHAKA brand and enhance our relationships in the library community;
- Where required, manage relationships with external Licensing Representatives to ensure alignment with participation goals for the region;
- Advise the Marketing team in ways that improve building awareness across our suite of JSTOR, Portico, and Artstor product lines;
- Represent ITHAKA externally at formal and informal events, including speaking engagements, presentations, and participation in community events and forums, especially those focused on the scholarly publishing and library communities;
- Communicate as needed with ITHAKA staff to ensure they have up to date information regarding strategic and participation objectives and goals;
- Ability to travel frequently (est. 40-50%).
Challenges You’ll Overcome
You will balance the needs of a variety of stakeholders and work collaboratively to develop and enhance ITHAKA’s strategic relationships.
You will be engaged in a full range of activities interacting with key individuals at academic institutions to support your promotional responsibilities.
You will develop a deep understanding of our different services (Artstor, Ithaka S+R, JSTOR and Portico) and their various product lines and work creatively with their leadership to support the promotional activities and enhance relationships.
Skills, Experience, and Characteristics
- Minimum 5 years of outreach management experience, including working in a distributed outreach organization from a home-based office.
- A proven record of success in meeting growth targets and building strategic relationships with senior leaders in the higher education library community.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in digital publishing, with a strong preference for knowledge of the scholarly communications environment and familiarity with the current digital landscape.
- Ability to balance strong mission-based goals with skill, efficiency, and discipline.
- Sophisticated understanding of content license agreements.
- Excellent record building and managing key relationships in the academic library community.
- Demonstrated aptitude for strategic thinking, business modeling, and product positioning in a quickly changing environment.
- Excellent analytical, technical, and communication skills. Record of public speaking.
- BA/BS required; MBA/MLS or advanced degree a plus.
