The Institute for the Study of Religion (ISR) traces its origin to 1984 when the Institute for the Study of Religion and Theology (ISRT) was founded at the Jesuit founded Sogang University in order to promote the study of religion and theology as well as mutual understanding between Korean religions and Christianity. The mission of the ISR is to advance theoretical and empirical studies of Korean religions and major world religious traditions including Christianity, Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, Islam and Shamanism. It further aims to foster communications and mutual understanding among the various religions traditions of Korea. In pursuit of this mission, the Institute carries out a variety of professional activities, including the promotion of academic exchanges, the administration of affiliated group research, academic seminars, colloquia and symposia, the compilation of an archive of religious studies research, and the publication of academic monographs and journals.
