This is with reference to the story, ‘Mendis wants Oman’s batting woes sorted’. It is nice to know that seasoned coach Duleep Mendis is set to rejig the batting line-up to ensure that the best batsmen could get to play the bulk of the 50 overs of the innings. He has also made his intention quite clear that star batsman Zeeshan Maqsood who is in very good form will be pushed to play in the lower-order to strengthen the middle-order batting.
However, cricket is a game of uncertainties. The gamble of pushing Maqsood down the order may or may not click. If my memory serves me right, the former coach of Oman cricket team Sandeep Patil tried this trick with Adnan Ilyas during one of the tours in the past. Unfortunately, his move fell flat as down the order, Ilyas’ batting did not click throughout the tour. Let’s hope Maqsood’s batting would click in the lower-order.
I was fortunate to watch both the international 50-over matches played recently against a strong opposition, the UAE cricket team, and feel proud to say that Oman performed quite well against a much better and strong opposition. Division 3 in Uganda is a wise move and for sure the team will get an added advantage of this conditioning outing.
All the best to Oman and I am confident that the boys under the leadership of Sultan Ahmed are going to perform beyond their fans’ expectations in the World Cricket League Division 3 tournament in Uganda.
