Biography
Jill Benn is a professionally qualified librarian with significant experience in the leadership and delivery of library services in the higher education environment. She is currently the University Librarian at the University of Western Australia (UWA), a research intensive university and a member of the Group of Eight Australian universities. Jill’s role requires the direction of over 100 library staff spread over six physical locations, who successfully provide a range of library services to over 1,500 academic staff and 25,000 students.

Jill has an excellent understanding of the needs of teachers, learners and researchers. She has played a pivotal role for several acclaimed initiatives at UWA including the new Science Library, a new improved student IT support model, improved support for research and the implementation of a mandatory online unit for all commencing undergraduate students (Communication and Research Skills). Jill’s open and consultative communication style combined with her ability to provide effective leadership, has resulted in the reshaping of services and the implementation of significant changes aimed at improving the student experience. She is focused on client engagement as a key strategy to develop and improve services.

Jill is actively involved with the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) and is a member of the CAUL Research Advisory Committee. She is also involved with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), holding a silver pin for service to the profession. Her expertise has been recognised through invitations to present at national and international conferences and she has demonstrated reflective practice through a number of publications. This professional involvement has enabled her to develop a national and international network of colleagues. Jill has previously chaired the Western Australian Group of University Librarians (WAGUL) and the Australian Library and Information Association WA Group.
