Take Two announced today that it has purchased Pop Top, the developer responsible for last year's Railroad Tycoon II and the upcoming simulation of banana republic politics, Tropico. Pop Top was previously associated with Gathering of Developers, which was acquired by Take Two in May. The deal shouldn't drastically alter the way Pop Top actually works, however, since the developer will remain at its current St. Louis, MO location and the studio's president, Philip Steinmeyer, recently signed a four-year contract with Take Two.

Barry Rutcofsky, co-chairman of Take-Two Interactive, said: "We look forward to continuing the teamwork between the Gathering of Developers and Pop Top Software, which previously resulted in the highly successful Railroad Tycoon II."

Pop Top's current work focuses on Tropico, a real-time strategy game in which players own a circa 1950 Caribbean nation. The game is due out early next year.
