Saudi Arabia: Right to drive is a long overdue step forward for women

Responding to the Saudi Arabian government’s announcement that women will be allowed to drive, Philip Luther, Amnesty International's Research and Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said:    “This is a long overdue small step in the right direction and we welcome this move if it means all women in Saudi Arabia will finally be able to drive without any restrictions. “If by June next year women in Saudi Arabia are driving the streets without fear of arrest, then this will be a cause for celebration.

Algeria: Human Rights Council adopts Universal Periodic Review outcome on Algeria

This is Amnesty International oral statement on the outcome of the third Universal Period Review of Algeria (UN Human Rights Council’s 36th session, 21-22 September 2017) in which it raises concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression, association and religion. The organization also expresses its regrets about the authorities' denial of long-standing requests to visit Algeria by the UN Special Procedures or to grant visas to international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International.

Morocco: Human Rights Council adopts Universal Periodic Review outcome on Morocco

This is Amnesty International oral statement on the outcome of the third Universal Period Review of Morocco (UN Human Rights Council’s 36th session, 21-22 September 2017) in which it raises concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly. The organization also calls to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure, in order to ensure the right to a fair trial, such as access to a lawyer during interrogation for all suspects, and considers regrettable that Morocco has rejected recommendations to repeal Article 489 and 490 of the Penal Code prohibiting same-sex sexual relations and sexual relations outside marriage.

Tunisia: Human Rights Council adopts Universal Periodic Review outcome on Tunisia

Saudi Arabia: Arrest of two prominent activists a deadly blow for human rights

Responding to the arrest over the weekend of two prominent Saudi Arabian human rights defenders Abdulaziz al-Shubaily and Issa al-Hamid, both founding members of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), Samah Hadid, Director of campaigns for Amnesty International in the Middle-East said:  “This is a dark time for freedom of expression in Saudi Arabia. These two arrests have confirmed our fears that the new leadership under Mohamed bin Salman is determined to crush the Kingdom’s human rights movement.

Saudi Arabia: Further information: Juvenile offender at risk of imminent execution: Abdulkareem al-Hawaj

The family of Abdulkareem al-Hawaj, a Saudi Arabian Shi’a young man sentenced to death for offences that occurred when he was 16 years old, learned that their son’s sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court on 11 September. He has exhausted all his appeals and is at risk of imminent execution.

Saudi Arabia: Wave of arrests targets last vestiges of freedom of expression In the last week Saudi Arabian authorities have intensified their crackdown on freedom of expression, detaining more than 20 prominent religious figures, writers, journalists, academics and activists, said Amnesty International. “In recent years we cannot recall a week in which so many prominent Saudi Arabian figures have been targeted in such a short space of time,” said Samah Hadid, Director of Campaigns for Amnesty International in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia: Execution looms for teen tortured to “confess” to protest-related crimes

A young Saudi Arabian Shi’a man who claims he was tortured to “confess” alleged crimes committed when he was 16 years old faces imminent execution, in the latest shocking example of Saudi Arabia’s ruthless clampdown on dissent, said Amnesty International today. The family of Abdulkareem al-Hawaj, now 21, were yesterday informed that the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence for his alleged role in anti-government protests.

Saudi Arabia: Further information: Saudi Arabian prisoner of conscience on trial: Issa al-Nukheifi

Saudi Arabian activist Issa al-Nukheifi was brought to trial before the counter-terror court on 21 August, where he first learned of the charges against him. The charges and the trial are connected to his human rights activism and social media posts. He is a prisoner of conscience and should be released immediately.

Egypt: Detention with no end in Sight for Human Rights Defender Hanan Badr el-Din

On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, ten organizations are urging Egyptian authorities to drop the preventative detention order against Hanan Badr el-Din, a human rights defender and co-founder of the “Association of the Families of the Disappeared” group. The organizations urge Egyptian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Hanan Badr el-Din. She has already spent more than three months in detention, solely for her work in defending the rights of people who has been forcibly disappeared.

Saudi Arabia: Further information: Prison term upheld for Saudi Arabian defender: Abdulaziz al-Shubaily

Saudi Arabian human rights defender Abdulaziz al-Shubaily was informed on 31 July that his eight-year prison sentence has been upheld by the Court of Appeal in Riyadh. He is now at risk of being imprisoned at any time to start serving his sentence. If imprisoned he will be a prisoner of conscience.

Iran: Further information: Severely ill Iranian Kurdish woman denied care: Zeynab Jalalian

Iranian Kurdish woman Zeynab Jalalian, serving a life sentence, is severely ill and requires specialized medical care outside prison. However, the authorities have persistently refused to transfer her to a hospital, apparently to punish her and extract forced “confessions”. In protest, she has been refusing all medications since March 2017. The denial of access to medical care in these circumstances amounts to torture.

Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territories: Further information: Palestinian university professor released: Ahmad Qatamesh

University professor Ahmad Qatamesh was released from administrative detention by the Israeli authorities on 13 August. His three month detention order was not renewed after it expired. He is now back home in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank with his family. Ahmad Qatamesh was a prisoner of conscience.
