Iran: Authorities amputate a man’s hand in shocking act of cruelty

Amnesty International is outraged by reports that Iranian authorities have amputated the hand of a man convicted of theft. The amputation, which was conducted by guillotine, took place yesterday in the central prison in Mashhad city in north-eastern Razavi Khorasan province, according to the state-sponsored newspaper Khorasan News. According to Khorasan News, the 34-year-old man, referred to as A. Kh. , was transferred to a medical centre immediately after the punishment was carried out.

Sudan: Opposition member alleges torture in Sudan prison: Radwan Daoud

Radwan Daoud alleges that he has been subjected to torture while in the custody of the Sudanese National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) in Khartoum. He made the allegation when his family was first allowed to visit him on 30 December 2017. He was arrested on 6 December 2017 and is yet to be charged. He has been denied access to a lawyer. Radwan Daoud is a dual national of the US and Sudan.

Cameroon: Ten arrested Anglophone leaders at risk of unfair trial and torture if deported from Nigeria

Ten leaders of the independence movement in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon could be at risk of torture and unfair trials if extradited from Nigeria, where they have been arrested and detained in secret for one week, Amnesty International said today. On 5 January, armed men in plain clothes stormed a hotel in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja where the pro- independence activists were meeting, and arrested them without presenting a warrant or providing an explanation.

Tunisia: Security forces must respect the rights of protesters amid planned acceleration of anti-austerity rallies

Tunisian security forces must refrain from using excessive force and end their use of intimidation tactics against peaceful demonstrators, Amnesty International said ahead of major anti-austerity protests planned across the country on Friday. During the past four days of anti-government demonstrations, security forces have used increasingly heavy-handed methods to disperse rallies and subsequently arrest protesters.

USA: After 16 years, close Guantánamo´s detention center once and for all

On the 16th anniversary of the opening of the notorious detention facility at the US naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Amnesty International is again calling for the fair trial or immediate release of those detained there and closure of the facility. “Over the years Guantánamo has come to symbolize torture, rendition and indefinite detention without charge or trial – in complete violation of internationally agreed standards of justice and human rights.

Iran: Investigate reports of protester deaths in custody

The Iranian authorities must immediately investigate reports that at least five people have died in custody following a crackdown on anti-establishment protests, and take all necessary steps to protect detainees from torture and prevent any further deaths, Amnesty International said today. “The shroud of secrecy and lack of transparency over what happened to these detainees is alarming. Instead of rushing to the judgment that they committed suicide, the authorities must immediately launch an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation, including independent autopsies,” said Magdalena Mughrabi, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

Iran: Stop increasingly ruthless crackdown and investigate deaths of protesters

Iranian authorities must ensure the right to peaceful protest, investigate reports that security forces have unlawfully used firearms against unarmed protesters and protect hundreds of detainees from torture and other ill-treatment, Amnesty International said today amid concerns that the crackdown against demonstrations that have spread across Iran in the past week is intensifying. Official statements have confirmed that at least 22 people, including two security officers, have been killed since 28 December, when thousands of Iranians began flocking to the streets to speak out against poverty, corruption, political repression and authoritarianism.

Iraq: 38 hanged in abhorrent mass execution

Responding to news that 38 people were executed in Iraq today for “terrorism” offences, Lynn Maalouf, Middle East Research Director at Amnesty International said: “By carrying out yet another mass execution, the second in the span of three months, the Iraqi authorities have once again displayed a blatant disregard for human life and dignity. “In the wake of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s declaration of victory over the armed group calling itself the Islamic State (IS) on 10 December, it is disheartening to see this week’s celebrations tainted with yet another mass execution.

Iran: Upholding academic’s death sentence in secret shows utter contempt for right to life

The Iranian Supreme Court has run roughshod over the rule of law by upholding the death sentence of Ahmadreza Djalali, an Iranian-born Swedish resident and specialist in emergency medicine, through a secret and hasty process and without allowing any defence submission, Amnesty International revealed today. Ahmadreza Djalali’s lawyers learned on Saturday 9 December that Branch 1 of the Supreme Court had considered and upheld his death sentence in a summary manner without granting them an opportunity to file their defence submissions.

“In prison they would hit us often,” said Ousman who spent five months in a Tripoli detention centre in 2016. “They killed many boys. I saw many people dying in prison, either because they fell sick or were beaten. ” Ousman is just one of hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants who have braved the journey across Africa to Libya and just one of tens of thousands who have ended up caught in a complex web of abuse and extortion.

Libya’s dark web of collusion: Abuses against Europe-bound refugees and migrants

In recent years, hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants have braved the journey across Africa to Libya and often on to Europe. In response, the Libyan authorities have used mass indefinite detention as their primary migration management tool. Regrettably, the European Union and Italy in particular, have decided to reinforce the capacity of Libyan authorities to intercept refugees and migrants at sea and transfer them to detention centres.

Russian Federation: Further information: Russian authorities block activist's release: Khudoberdi Nurmatov (Ali Feruz)

The Russian authorities continue to block activist and journalist Ali Feruz’s release from detention. On 21 November the Basmannyi District court in Moscow issued Ali Feruz with a 5,000 rouble (USD$ 85) fine for working illegally and upheld the decision to deport the activist to Uzbekistan, where he would be at risk of human rights violations.
