Time Traveling with Vintage Selfie Star Annelies van Overbeek

To keep up with all of Annelies’ looks, follow @anneliesvanoverbeek on Instagram.

It started with a pixie haircut. “People began telling me I looked like Audrey Hepburn,” Annelies van Overbeek (@anneliesvanoverbeek) says. After recognizing her resemblance to the actress, Annelies started re-creating iconic Hollywood looks. “I fell in love with the elegance and style of vintage silver screen glamour,” the 17-year-old history student from Belgium says. Annelies gathers most costumes from thrift stores and charity shops; it often takes over a month of planning before she’s ready to take a vintage selfie. Lots of looks are in the works, but soon, Annelies will travel to 16th century England to share her interpretation of Queen Anne Boleyn’s selfie style. “I’m really excited about that one!”

Speaking Truth to Power with @markruffalo at the Oscars

Follow Mark Ruffalo @markruffalo to see more moments from the actor’s life with his family and making movies, plus follow #Oscars for all the award show action.

It’s the third time actor Mark Ruffalo (@markruffalo) is attending the #Oscars as a nominee, but he still describes his pre-award show routine as “a little nervy and expectant.” At 48, the star is up for his supporting role as journalist Michael Rezendes in Spotlight, a drama with six major nods including Best Picture. The film is a true story, based on the experience of Boston Globe reporters who worked to break news of a scandal within their local Catholic church. “We have to hold our institutions accountable. One very good and efficient way of doing that is through the power of journalism. We must speak truth to power to protect the most innocent and cherished members of our society,” Mark says about the plot. As a hectic awards season wraps up, the dad of three is also looking forward to sharing lighter moments with his family. “I am going to hang out with my kids, spend time with my friends, have dates with my wife, perhaps go on a little vacation, read, see plays and maybe learn how to do something I don’t already know how to do,” he says. “In short, I’m going to live a little.”

Reimagining #ReelWomen in Hollywood with @dosomething

All this month, @dosomething will be collecting images of reimagined heroines. Share yours with #ReelWomen and visit dosomething.org/reelwomen to learn more.

From 2007 to 2012, only 30.8 percent of speaking characters in the top 500 movies were women. But Nikita Jansen (@artbynikita), a 17-year-old actress and artist living in Los Angeles, saw an even bigger issue.

“It’s not a Hollywood secret that the film industry tends to whitewash their casts,” says Nikita. “I can’t recall ever seeing an Asian woman as a leading role in a major franchise, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a leading character wearing a hijab.”

To address that, Nikita drew what she wished she saw on the big screen: leads from two of this year’s most anticipated blockbusters — The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens — as women of color.

“While the original actresses are great, I wanted to show that hiring actresses from different backgrounds won’t change who the character is,” says Nikita. “With this in mind, producers should consider creating heroines that people of all backgrounds can recognize and look up to.”
