Tunisia: Drop charges against blogger and newly elected parliamentarian

The prosecution of Tunisian blogger and parliament elect Yassine Ayari in a military court for his posts on Facebook is a serious violation of the right to freedom of expression and the right to fair trial, said Amnesty International. On 4 January, a military prosecutor charged Ayari with “undermining the morale of the army” for a Facebook post published on 27 February 2017, in which he mocked the appointment of a senior military commander.

Uzbekistan: Further information: Independent journalist must be immediately released: Bobomurod Abdullayev

On 10 January, the family of Uzbekistani independent journalist Bobomurod Abdullayev, held since 27 September 2017 in an Uzbekistani National Security Service (SNB) detention centre, was allowed to see him for the first time in three months. While the family saw no visible signs of torture, concerns for his wellbeing remain. He has had no access to independent legal representation since December 2017.

Pakistan: End impunity for attacks on journalists

The attacks on Taha Siddiqui and other Pakistani journalists must be immediately and effectively investigated by the authorities, Amnesty International said today, calling for an end to impunity for such attacks. Taha Siddiqui was driving to Islamabad airport at 8:20am today when the car he was traveling in was besieged by at least 10 armed men, who beat him, threatened to kill him, and tried to abduct him.

Myanmar: Reuters journalists must be released

The Myanmar authorities must immediately release two journalists from the Reuters news agency who have been arbitrarily detained for investigating military abuses in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Amnesty International said. The two journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, are due in court tomorrow. They had been investigating the recent military operations in Rakhine State when they were arrested on 12 December 2017.

Israel/OPT: Military must end excessive force to avoid further bloodshed and deaths

Ahead of planned protests in the Occupied Palestinian Territories tomorrow, and in the wake of the deaths of four Palestinian protesters and the injuring of hundreds of others in the last two weeks, Amnesty International is calling on the Israeli authorities to put an end to the excessive force that has been part of its response to demonstrations and clashes resulting from the decision by the US administration to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Mexico: Amnesty International chief slams interior security law and calls on Mexican president to veto it

Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Salil Shetty, today directed an open letter to Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto, calling on the leader to veto the Law on Interior Security that passed Mexico´s Congress on Friday. Speaking on behalf of an organization that represents a movement of more than 7 million people around the world, Shetty noted that “Behind the vague and overly broad concept of ‘interior security’, the law conceals dangerous and concerted efforts to maintain the role of the armed forces in public security functions.

What is the Sierra Leone Civic Space Manifesto? The civic space manifesto is a document designed and supported by over 40 Sierra Leonean civil society organizations to call on political parties ahead of the March 2018 elections to commit to four human rights principles to better safeguard civic space in Sierra Leone. It is our hope that all political parties in Sierra Leone will commit to the principles outlined in this manifesto, incorporate them into their party manifesto and policies and commit to furthering these commitments if elected to political positions.
