Equatorial Guinea: Artist Freed from Prison

An Equatorial Guinean court on March 7, 2018 released an artist imprisoned on dubious charges for nearly six months, 18 human rights groups said today. The prosecution dropped all charges against Ramón Esono Ebalé, a cartoonist whose work is often critical of the government, at his February 27 trial after the police officer who had accused him of counterfeiting $1,800 of local currency admitted making the accusation based on orders from his superiors.

Chechnya: Persecuted for defending human rights

Over the past 10 years, human rights activists working in Chechnya have faced mounting threats, attacks and harassment. For years, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and other public officials have routinely vilified human rights defenders as “puppets of the West” and “enemies of Russia” bent on destabilizing Chechnya. Some activists have also suffered attacks and harassment by local security officials or pro-government thugs.

Viet Nam: Further Information: Health fears for relocated jailed activist: Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh

Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh, known as blogger Mẹ Nấm (Mother Mushroom) was secretly moved over 900km away to a prison with deplorable conditions, that is far away from her family. Currently serving a 10-year prison sentence and denied access to her medication, there are serious concerns for her deteriorating health.

Russian Federation: Further Information: Whistle-blower faces two more months in jail: Aleksandr Eivazov

Whistle-blower Aleksandr Eivazov has spent six months in detention and is due to be released on 19 February. However, the investigator has petitioned for an extension of Eivazov’s detention for two more months. Aleksandr Eivazov is a prisoner of conscience and should be released immediately.

CAMBODIA: CRACKDOWNS ON OPPOSITION, CIVIL SOCIETY AND MEDIA MUST BE ADDRESSED BY THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

In September 2017, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Cambodia warned that Cambodia “seems to be moving inexorably towards a precipice. ” Since the Special Rapporteur sounded the alarm, the situation has further worsened. The Government has deepened its crackdown on the political opposition, independent media, civil society, human rights defenders and activists. The 37th session provides one last opportunity for the Council to address this deteriorating human rights situation before the Cambodian general elections, scheduled for 29 July 2018.

Ethiopia: Eskinder’s release must herald a new dawn of respect for human rights

Commenting after Ethiopian journalist and Amnesty International prisoner of conscience Eskinder Nega walked out of prison a free man today, as part of a government pardon of 746 prisoners, Sarah Jackson, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes, said: “We are delighted that Eskinder Nega is finally free after close to seven years in jail on trumped up terrorism charges.

Uzbekistan: Investigate Torture of Journalist: 12 Human Rights Groups Call for Journalist’s, Others’ Immediate Release

Uzbekistani authorities should ensure a thorough, impartial, and independent investigation into the alleged torture and other ill-treatment of a detained independent journalist, 12 human rights groups said today. Uzbekistani authorities should immediately release Bobomurod Abdullaev (Abdullayev) and other people detained solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression, the groups said.

Burundi: Further information: Detained human rights defender awaiting trial: Nestor Nibitanga

Nestor Nibitanga, a former member of the deregistered Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Detained Persons (APRODH), remains in detention awaiting trial for charges of ‘threatening state security’ and ‘rebellion’. He was arrested in Gitega, Burundi on 21 November 2017. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience.

Cambodia: Activist immediately jailed after forcible return: Sam Sokha

Sam Sokha, a UNHCR recognised refugee, was arrested and detained by Cambodian authorities when forcibly returned from Thailand on 8 February. She had been convicted in absentia of “incitement” for her peaceful political activism and sentenced to over two years imprisonment plus a fine. Amnesty International considers her a prisoner of conscience.

Burundi: Release prisoners of conscience immediately and unconditionally

Amnesty International calls on the Burundian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release five human rights defenders detained simply on account of their human rights work. Germain Rukuki, whose trial started today, Nestor Nibitanga, Emmanuel Nshimirimana, Aimé Constant Gatore and Marius Nizigiyimana are all charged with threatening state security. Amnesty International considers the five men to be prisoners of conscience as they have been imprisoned solely for the peaceful exercise of their human rights.

Burundi: Members of NGO wrongly accused, facing trial

Emmanuel Nshimirimana, Aimé Constant Gatore and Marius Nizigiyimana are on trial for “threatening state security” and using fake documents. A verdict is expected on 26 February. They are members of the Burundian non-governmental organization Words and Actions for the Awakening of Consciences and the Evolution of Mentalities (PARCEM). Amnesty International considers them to be prisoners of conscience.
