Iraqi army attacks Isis island stronghold
The Iraqi army has launched an operation to push Isis out of an island stronghold on the Tigris river, five weeks after Baghdad announced final victory over the group.
The militants’ hideout on the Bosifian islands, south of Mosul in Salaheddin province, was discovered late last month. Explosives and suicide belts were found along with a network of tunnels. It is one of at least ten patches across Iraq where Isis militants are still active. About 100 Isis fighters have been killed by Iraqi security forces in the past week.
