A Texas woman who recovered from an earlier bout of the flu died after she came down with the illness again.
Angie Barwise, 58, first tested positive for influenza a few days after Christmas, but got better by taking antiviral medication, news station KDFW reported.
Nearly a month later, however, the Fort Worth woman fell sick again with a fever and went to the doctor.
Doctors determined that Barwise was infected with Type B influenza — a different strain of the virus.
She was sent home with more medication, but her health did not improve.
“The fever just continued,” her husband Greg Barwise told KDFW. “Every four and a half hours, we’d have to give her medicine to get the fever down.”
He brought her to the emergency room on Jan. 31 and doctors ran tests before sending them home, the Washington Post reported.
But the next day, the 58-year-old returned after the hospital called with concerns about her blood work.
In addition to the flu, she reportedly had pneumonia and was in septic shock, causing her health to dramatically deteriorate.
Barwise died on Feb. 3 of complications from the flu.
“I left for just a few minutes — I thought everything was going to be OK,” her husband told DFW-TV. “[Then] I got a phone call that she had just passed.”
A GoFundMe page was created to raise money for her funeral services.
