About OUIHC

The Oxford University Ice Hockey Club, known as O.U.I.H.C. is home to the Men’s and Women’s Blues ice hockey teams of the University of Oxford.  The Club is a student-run inclusive community of academic ice hockey players from Oxford and nearby institutions.  Oxford University matriculated students on the Men’s and Women’s Blues squads participate in the near 200-year old tradition of representing Oxford in the Varsity Match against Cambridge University. Varsity Match players get the opportunity to earn the prestigious Oxford Blue for their performance. The first Varsity Match recorded was in 1900 (likely a bandy match) but the origins of the club likely go as far back as 1885. In 1921, the OUIHC was formed as an official University club – uniting all ice hockey players at Oxford. As in 1921, the values of inclusion and unity are still upheld by the OUIHC today. In addition the club honours the tradition of earning Oxford Blues in the Ice Hockey Varsity Match as all Blues sports of the University may do. A distinguished list of alumni have earned the ice hockey Blue.

Men’s ice hockey at Oxford, historically known as the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club (OUIHC), can trace its roots back to the unconfirmed 1885 ice hockey match against Cambridge and the official Varsity Match of 1900. Over a century later, the Oxford University team is known in the league as the Oxford University Blues (part of the OUIHC) and competes in the top division of the British University Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA). The team is comprised predominantly of Oxford University students, but also accepts staff, alumni and students from adjacent institutions, upholding the Club’s values of inclusivity and integration. As an official Varsity team we hold Discretionary Full Blue status with the University of Oxford and play historic rivals Cambridge University in the annual Blues Varsity Match.Learn More
As of the end of the 2014-2015 season, the Oxford Women’s Blues are the top women’s team in UK university ice hockey. Since entering the British University’s Ice Hockey Association in 2010, the Women’s Blues have steadily improved year-over-year. Our reputation has grown in recent years as one of the top teams in the BUIHA’s top non-checking division where we compete with men’s and mixed teams from around the UK. Each year, our roster consists of players with a variety of playing experience and, this year, includes players from Canada, Sweden, the USA, the UK, Singapore, Korea, France, Germany, and Hungary. The Vikings, or amongst the OUIHC affectionately known as the Vikes, are the men’s second team. Originally formed as the Cosmopolitans in the 1920’s and rejuvenated as the Vikings in 1994, the team now provides development hockey to students new to the sport and acts as a pathway to the Blues squad. The Vikings traditionally play the second team Varsity Match against the Cambridge Eskimos, with the heritages of both teams dating back to the infant years of ice hockey in the UK. The Oxford Vikings are one of the founding member teams of the British University Ice Hockey Association and have had notable success in the League Cup Competition and the National Championships, mostly recently winning the Division 2 title in 2013-14.
