Lead Web Developer Position Overview:

Al-Monitor is looking for an experienced Developer to lead our development of innovative online programming that complements our award-winning coverage of the politics, people and the culture across the Middle East. This is an exciting role, and the successful candidate will work hand-in-hand with global business, editorial and technical team members and be responsible for designing, coding, modifying and maintaining the Al-Monitor website and conceiving ancillary products.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:  Lead Web Developer will be responsible for overseeing Al-Monitor.com. This includes but is not limited to layout, functionality and user experience. The Lead proposes development strategies to help the group become more efficient and strives to create robust, recyclable code that is user-friendly.

The candidate must have a strong understanding of UI, cross-browser compatibility, general web functions and standards.

Responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage technical teams and the product development schedule for the ALM web site and digital products. 
  • Ensure and help developers to produce elegant solutions following design and style guides to new products.
  • Effectively communicate potential solutions and realistic timelines to management.
  • Manage the ALM system development (include email servers, JVM cloud servers, integration of the additional software (SailThru, JWPlayer, WeVideo, Marketing Factory) 
  • Design editorial tools to streamline publishing.
  • Manage data integrity and PCI relationship
  • Organize development, testing and maintain delivery, uptime and speed across multiple devices and ISP access of our end users. 
  • Participate in project teams from concept through production.
  • Maintain high degree of industry knowledge re content management, digital distribution and video production.
  • Perform other duties as required. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • At least 5 years of experience in media and its unique content management needs
  •  A proven track record of managing fast growth.  
  • Must have expert level experience with development in Java EE and expected to become cerified in our CMS, Jahia. 
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrate organizational and time management skills and work well under deadline pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to strike a balance between showing initiative and seeking appropriate guidance and input from others.  
  • Ability to prioritize work load and consistently meet deadlines. 
  • Good interpersonal skills; effective team player. 

Technical Skills:

Must have:

  • Experience in HTML, JS, JQUERY, CSS
  • Experience as technical team lead, min 3 years
  • Experience with Mobile web design/development

Nice to have:

  • Experience in Spring, JSTL, REST
  • Paid content, subscription or user registration experience.
  • Experience with some source control system
  • Work with some Issue / bug tracking system
  • Active work with Google tools (Analytics, Webmaster, Custom Dimensions, Surveys, Tag Manager)

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a clear understanding of each facet of the design process including: user experience, interaction design, research and usability, motion design, and brand integration. Ideal candidates will be eager to work with a dynamic team of like-minded individuals to support our creative needs and drive our products forward.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:      

  • Create high quality, compelling marketing/promotional materials in a variety of media including: landing pages, web banners, emails, print, social media and mobile - all while upholding brand standards.
  • Create high quality designs to support stories and videos on the website, newsletters and other products.
  • Participate in project teams from concept through production.
  • Generate unique creative and visual solutions that achieve marketing goals in a constantly changing competitive landscape.
  • Work with UX designers to ensure the visual design enhances the overall user experience.
  • Collaborate with brand designers to ensure the visual design aligns to the brand strategy.
  • Deliver visual assets to development counterparts on time and with quality.
  • Communicate, defend, and build consensus around visuals and design direction.
  • Effectively communicate with developers through implementation to realize design vision.
  • Work with user researchers to coordinate testing efforts, interpret test results, and incorporate results into design efforts.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Highly proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), HTML and PowerPoint
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and manage work independently to adhere to critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment
  • Must have a strong portfolio featuring examples of online design work
  • BA/BS degree in Graphic Design, Communication Design, Interface Design, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years’ experience designing products and promotional material in a visual or graphic design capacity.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Familiarity with user scenarios, task flows, conceptual models, and usability testing.
  • Experience in delivering quality production assets to engineering counterparts on time.
  • Good interpersonal skills; effective team player.
  • Media Industry experience preferred.
