Qatargas has today inaugurated the world’s first fully integrated value chain liquefied natural gas (LNG) venture – the US$9.3 billion Qatargas 2.

The Amir of  Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, officially opened the project in front of guests at Ras Laffan City. The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, witnessed the inauguration on behalf of the United Kingdom.

The Qatargas 2 project consists of  three offshore unmanned platforms, two LNG trains, five storage tanks, two loading berths, a fleet of 14 LNG ships and the South Hook receiving terminal located in Milford Haven, Wales.

The first LNG ship arrived at the terminal in March and eventually Qatargas will supply 20% of the UK’s gas requirements.

Also attending the inauguration was Abdulla Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy & Industry. He said:

“This is an important day for the LNG industry and for the State of Qatar.  The Qatargas 2 project represents a new source of energy diversity and supply for the United Kingdom and other LNG markets around the world.”

“Qatargas 2 also represents a sizable investment in long term capacity creation through the construction of these pioneering mega-trains and ships to transport the LNG,” he added.

Guests in attendance at the inauguration included politicians from both Qatar and the UK as well as representatives from Qatargas shareholders, Qatar Petroleum (QP),  ExxonMobil and Total.
