But perhaps the best moment of the day goes to Sandy Lyle.

This could be the former champion's final Open appearance as the Scot's automatic entry runs out for next year now he is aged 60.

He received a fine reception from his home crowd as he made his way down the 18th and then went and holed a great putt for birdie.

Lyle admitted afterwards it was a struggle to hold things together when he started the hole.

It wasn't straightforward for Tiger Woods.

He's six shots back after a second successive level-par 71 so is just about still in touch.

He had some classic Tiger birdie moments but also let four bogeys spoil his card.

Rory McIlroy was one of the earliest starters today.

Like Fleetwood he produced an excellent round and got the crowd humming in delight.

There were four birdies in total along with dropped shots on the 12th and 15th holes.

He's on four under, two shots off the lead in a tie for sixth.

It's only the second time Rory has hit two rounds in the 60s at The Open. The other time was in 2014 when he went on to win it.

Ooooh. Zander Lombard misses with his birdie chance on the last. He stays at four under.

That's everyone from the top two pages of the leaderboard done.

Johnson and Kisner lead the way on -6, one shot clear of the chasing pack.

Fleetwood's six-under-par 65 is the best we have seen in the tournament. He moved the ball around the course at will in wet morning conditions. Could the Englishman win his first Major here?

It's bubbling up to be a fascinating weekend. Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler are among the names right in the mix.

There are unexpected names there too. American Pat Perez is on -5 as is compatriot Xander Schauffele.

Erik van Rooyen is four under.

Justin Rose hit his first birdie of the round on the 18th to take him to three over, just making the cut.

Scotland's Sam Locke shot a second round of two-over par 73 to become the only amateur to qualify for the weekend, securing the Silver Medal as the leading amateur.

Locke recovered from dropping three shots at the start of his round and reeled off three straight birdies on the back nine.

Two bogeys over the last three holes left Locke with a nervous wait having been in the first group out at 06:35 BST.

But with the cut falling at +3, he will be back at the weekend.

Locke is a prodigy of 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie and he works part-time at Lawrie's golf centre in Aberdeen.

Jordan Spieth, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "Only one bogey on the card helped. We got very lucky with the conditions. It is nice to take advantage when you get that opportunity.

"I think I am outside of the top 10, but I need to make up ground on the leaders. You need to stay within three shots of the leaders when it is bunched heading into Sunday."

A level-par second round of 71 is good enough to earn England's Paul Casey two more rounds.

80% of fairways hit for Casey, who had two bogeys and two birdies.

I feel for those players yet to finish. There are six people in the stand behind the 17th green and three of those are marshals

And that dropped shot means Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner will almost certainly be our two co-leaders at the end of the second round.

They're both on six under.

It could have been even better for Kisner but for his double bogey nightmare on the last.

Zander Lombard's challenge is faltering right at the end of round two. He follows bogey on 16 with another dropped shot on 17.

The world number 444, who probably can't believe he's in this position at the Open, needs to finish off his round here to stay in touch.

Masters champion Patrick Reed will be around at the weekend after a one-under par 70 in the second round.

The American bounces back from a first round 75 despite dropping three shots over his last four holes.

He had been four under through 14 until a double bogey at the 15th and bogey at the 16th.

How has that not dropped? I gravity-defier prevents Tony Finau from scrambling his par on 18. He falls back to -4, two shots off the lead.

Playing partner Xander Schauffele makes his par putt to stay at five under. That's a 66 for the 24-year-old today, the second best round we have seen. Only Tommy Fleetwood has produced better.

Three birdies over the last six holes including one at the last for a three-under par 68 for American Matt Kuchar.

Four birdies and just one bogey for Kuchar during his second round as he adds to an opening round of 70 to move firmly in the mix.

Kuchar achieved his best finish in a major at The Open last year after claiming tied for second at Royal Birkdale.

When Justin Rose curled in that lovely 10-foot putt on 18, BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter turned to summariser Paul Lawrie next to him and said: “I think that’s the first time we’ve seen smile all day”. Rose was still smiling when he reached the mixed zone to talk to the press 20 minutes later, but he was the first to admit what a frustrating day it had been: ”I kept hearing oohs and aahs and cheers elsewhere, but all I was getting was sighs. I felt they were suffering with me."

It's all happening on the 18th. Like Finau, Jhonattan Vegas has failed to find the fairway. He tries to hack his way out of the rough but gets it all wrong. The ball flies into the grandstand but he gets a huge break as it comes out sideways and settles back on the fairway.

He's still way back but it could have been worse.

Finau meanwhile slips as he plays his second from the bunker and finds the rough before the burn.
