Super League: Wakefield Trinity 72-10 Hull FC

Wakefield confirmed their place in the Super 8s with a big win over Hull FC.

Tries from Tom Johnstone, David Fifita, Jacob Miller, Pauli Pauli, Reece Lyne and James Batchelor saw the hosts to a commanding 38-point half-time lead.

Ben Jones-Bishop scored two second-half tries, while Miller, Lyne and Pauli ran in for their second of the game.

Max Jowitt went over for Trinity's 12th try, while Ryan Hampshire kicked 24 points before Liam Harris and Bureta Faraimo scored late consolations.

A record Super League defeat for Hull means leaders St Helens are already guaranteed a top-four finish with eight matches still to play, while it confirms a bottom-four placing for reigning champions Leeds, who will have to fight for survival in the Super 8s Qualifiers for the second time in three years.

After Hampshire kicked an early penalty, a free-flowing move from right to left saw Jowitt's pin-point pass send Johnstone - who signed a new deal with the club on Saturday - over in the corner.

Fifita's fine solo try extended the home side's lead, while Miller's neat dummy on the line saw Wakefield take control inside the opening 25 minutes.

Pauli fought off the attention of three Hull players to power over for Wakefield's fourth try, Lyne stretched for the line to go over and then turned provider to set up Batchelor moments before half-time

Wakefield's 38-0 lead at the break was stretched further when Jones-Bishop ran in under the posts, while Jowitt finished off a fantastic break by Hampshire after Tinirau Arona's inside pass.

Miller, Lyne and Jones-Bishop powered over for their second tries of the afternoon and Jowitt ran in under the posts, while Harris and Faraimo scored tries two minutes apart to at least get Hull on the board.

Wakefield coach Chris Chester:

"We always felt comfortable coming into this game but certainly didn't expect that scoreline.

"It was beyond my wildest expectations, especially when you look at the players they brought in so late yesterday but I think that kind of helped us, it gave us a focus because we knew we had to turn up today.

"I thought everybody was fantastic and it was probably the best I've seen Reece Lyne play. He looked like a future international and caused Hull problems on that left edge."

Hull coach Lee Radford:

"What could have gone wrong went wrong. We got the opposite of what we asked for and I take full responsibility for that defeat.

"We rolled the dice with four, perhaps five players, in terms of fitness and clearly you could see they were not quite ready to come back and compete at that level. I felt we had nothing to lose, our season was on the line.

"I'm disappointed with myself. I apologise wholeheartedly to the fans and promise that we will work hard on putting some pride back in the badge on Friday night. Rest assured I will be working hard and my staff will be working as hard as we can to right some wrongs from today."
