Capital Plan Hybrid Planning Application

Over the next 5 years, the University is embarking on its next phase of building works, which includes nine development projects. These include:

• A new Faculty of Arts on the central campus
• A new Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB) at Gibbet Hill
• Residences for up to 1,000 students

As these combined projects will give rise to new floorspace and new parking requirements which are not reflected in the 2009 Masterplan, a fresh planning permission is required.

In this context, the University is preparing a single planning application to cover all nine projects and enable their combined impacts to be considered together. The application will be submitted to Coventry City Council as all projects lie within Coventry’s administrative boundary. The application is a ‘hybrid’ planning application as some of the projects will be submitted for detailed approval and others will be submitted for outline approval only. It will include a revised Travel Plan which will set targets for the increased use of public transport, car sharing and cycle use as well as set new car parking limits, which will be tied to a new (S106) legal agreement.

Proposed Faculty of Arts Building

Our vision for a new Faculty building is to create a space that is open, inviting and flexible, enabling collaboration, creativity and innovation to flourish. A space that will act as a hub both for public engagement in the arts and humanities and for nurturing cultural value. A space, most importantly, that will unite all of the Faculty of Arts departments from Millburn House and the Humanities Building under one roof and provide specialist facilities to support their work.

We will apply for planning permission for this project as part of our Capital Plan hybrid planning application.

Proposed Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building

We plan to invest £54.3M in a new state-of-the-art research building on the Gibbet Hill campus that will bring together up to 300 biomedical researchers from across the School of Life Sciences and Warwick Medical School to fight human diseases.

It will provide the two Schools with a world-class environment, including a new 400-seat lecture theatre and many new social and collaboration spaces, in which to train future generations of biomedical researchers.

We will apply for planning permission for this project as part of our Capital Plan hybrid planning application.

Warwick Arts Centre Redevelopment

Warwick Arts Centre 20:20 Capital Project aims to refresh, renew and redevelop the existing building, which was constructed in 1974, and create a modern, updated, larger space in which to continue the organisation’s distinctive, creative, artistic and cultural programme.

The project includes an essential upgrade to the building, plus a new build to house three HD digital auditoria, a large ground floor gallery ready to exhibit some of the very best contemporary art, sculpture and photography and a spacious new-look foyer offering a welcoming environment. The plans include open spaces for eating, drinking and socialising; and the foyer will be designed to showcase the very best in art and entertainment.

The new building will be accessible, environmentally sustainable and a hub for international class digital art, exhibitions and performances. Scheduled to take three years to complete, with the building open throughout. Warwick Arts Centre will continue to provide audiences with a full programme of events and shows taking place both within the venue and in an onsite temporary theatre.

National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC)

The NAIC is a joint venture between Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors with funding from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund. The National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) will create and develop novel technologies to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and to reduce CO2 emissions. As well as housing work on the latest advances in automotive technology, the NAIC will help develop a stronger supplier base in the UK. Find out more about the NAIC here.

Sports Hub

We aim to have the most physically active campus community in the UK by 2020, offering the world-class sporting experience you'd expect of a world-class University. That's why we're investing in a new Sports Hub on campus and in the improvement of our existing sports facilities. These new developments come in the form of a “hub and spokes” model. The new Sports facility will be the main centre for sporting activity on campus, with our developed and enhanced existing facilities connected to it as “spokes”.

Located off Leighfield Road on the Warwickshire side of campus, this new facility will offer a new sports hall, a flexible swimming pool, fitness suites, climbing and bouldering walls, squash courts, flexible studio spaces, a welcoming café and outdoor 3G sports pitches and netball courts.

Our plans for this new Sports Hub are a part of our wider strategy to encourage a healthy University life and to bring world-class facilities to our international campus. Once complete, it will be available to our students, our staff and the general public.

The Sports Hub will:

• Offer a top quality sporting experience for our students, staff and local community.
• Embed the principles of an active landscape in the University master plan.
• Be both operationally and environmentally sustainable.

Mathematical Sciences Building

We're constructing our new Mathematical Science Building, adjacent to the existing Maths and Stats building (Zeeman Building) and the Computer Science building, in Academic Square, on central campus.

This facility will support our Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences departments in their work - work that can have a profound impact on our society, our communities and our cities and recently won £2 million in funding from the Wolfson Foundation.

The 6 storey high building will provide space for research, teaching and collaboration and will house staff who work on interdisciplinary initiatives like the Alan Turing Institute (ATI), the national institute for data science, of which Warwick is a founding member .

Cryfield Residences

Cryfield Residences will provide build town house style student residences on the site of the existing Redfern residences.

Materials Engineering Centre

Our Materials Engineering Centre (MEC) will create more research space for applications-driven, “engineering scale” research into multi-materials and hybrid structures. This will open up new collaborative opportunities with our business partners, bringing benefits to the local economy.

The MEC will be a key facility for the Global Research Priority in Materials and will contribute to the Energy, Innovative Manufacturing and Sustainable Cities priorities.

The facility will include a double height 850m2 engineering hall plus laboratories, workshops, staff and teaching space totalling 1,200m2 on three floors. The largest proportion of the funding for this £10m+ project is from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

This building will be based in the Academic Square area of campus, alongside the IIPSI, IINM and NAIC facilities.

New Multi-Storey Carpark

We have received planning permission for the construction of a new multi-storey car park south of University House in the western part of campus.

The University is allowed a maximum of 5,422 car parking spaces on campus as a legal condition of its 2009-approved Masterplan and related Travel Plan which governs new development over a 10 year period to 2019. The Travel Plan has seen major investment in new infrastructure, including the upgrading of a number of junctions on local roads as part of a Congestion Relief Scheme delivered with the City Council, a major increase in the number of bus services and a new Bus Interchange, new cycle and pedestrian routes, a cycle hire scheme and the development of a successful car sharing scheme.

The University remains strongly committed to sustainable travel. It also recognises the need for additional car parking to provide for changing needs of the campus. Sherbourne Extension

In response to the ever growing number of students who want to live on the campus after their first year of study, we've added an extra 267 ensuite rooms adjacent to the existing Sherbourne residences on the opposite side of the tennis courts. These three new blocks are a key part of our strategy to provide more on-campus accommodation to our ever-growing student community.

This project, along with the new residences at Cryfield Village is part of our work to address that need.

The Oculus Teaching and Learning Building

The Teaching and Learning building complements our existing high quality facilities and demonstrates our commitment to an outstanding teaching and student experience. Incorporating a 500 seat premier lecture theatre and a variety of flexible and functional teaching rooms interwoven with social learning spaces, the building brings an architectural excellence to the area that will inform all of our future construction development. Designed to have an outstanding architectural form, it will become an integral part of University life and the landscape while delivering outstanding academic outputs.

Mechanochemical Cell Biology Building extension

Opened by Nobel Prize winner Dr Randy Schekman, the new extension to the Mechanochemical Cell Biology Building (MCBB) houses a new high quality laboratory and space for more researchers to carry out research into diseases such as cancer.
