Ellie Awards 2018 Winners Announced. Read the Press Release

The Ellie Awards honor print and digital publications that consistently demonstrate superior execution of editorial objectives, innovative techniques, noteworthy enterprise and imaginative design. Originally limited to print magazines, the awards now recognize magazine-quality journalism published in any medium. Founded in 1966, the awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and are administered by ASME.

Finalists and winners will be honored at the Ellie Awards Annual Gala, hosted by ASME, at noon on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Finalists in each of the 20 Ellie Award categories receive certificates of recognition. The winner in each category receives an “Ellie,” modeled on the symbol of the awards, Alexander Calder’s stabile “Elephant.” The winners of the 2018 ASME Next Awards for Journalists Under 30 will also be honored at the gala. Among the notable changes for 2018 are the introduction of awards for Social Media and Digital Innovation and the discontinuation of the Multimedia and Magazine of the Year categories. Multimedia can now be entered in the new Digital Innovation category as well as in categories such as Personal Service, Leisure Interests, Reporting and Public Interest. When it was introduced in 2010, Magazine of the Year was the only Ellie Award to honor multiplatform publications. Now that every category is open to digital content, ASME believes that the goal of the Ellies—to recognize editorial excellence in a wide range of publications—is better served by focusing attention on the finalists and winners in the four General Excellence categories.

ASME is also pleased to announce the introduction of the ASME Award for Fiction. Intended to celebrate the historic role of magazines in the discovery of new writers, the ASME Award for Fiction will be judged separately from the Ellie Awards by a panel of literary editors. The winner of the award will receive a medal bearing the image of Alexander Calder’s “Elephant” and will be honored at the Ellie Awards Annual Gala.
