ASME Next Talks With Anne Fulenwider - Pictures
Tuesday night newly minted Marie Claire editor-in-chief Anne Fulenwider took the stage at 2013's first ASME Next Talks. In an interview with Allie Haake of Hearst Magazines, Fulenwider chatted about her career path, which included a handful of years at The Paris Review and a decade at Vanity Fair. She left Vanity Fair to work as executive editor at Marie Claire before landing the top spot at Brides for a year. Since returning to Marie Claire as editor in chief last November, Fulenwider said, she hasn’t pursued a big overhaul of the magazine but has instead focused on freshening up the design and expanding the brand footprint. "It’s never a good idea to go in and transform everything just to change it or try and make your mark,” she said. "It's about doing what's best for the magazine." Her advice for junior editors looking to get hired at a glossy? "You have to show an eagerness and prove that no task is too big or too small." Fulenwider also said that she looks for employees who have interests outside of work, like a beauty editor she recently hired who dabbles in rock climbing. "It's so important to have a genuine curiosity not just about magazines but the world around you," Fulenwider said.—Arianna Davis
