Carolyn Kylstra is the editor-in-chief of SELF. She led the transformation of the historically print-rooted brand into a thriving digitally led organization, resulting in SELF's highest traffic and video views in brand history.
In her first year as editor-in-chief, Carolyn launched SELF as the first health publication on Snapchat Discover, where the brand quickly amassed a large, dedicated following of over 10 million visitors per month. Additionally, SELF won a National Magazine Award for social media at the 2018 Ellies, and Carolyn was honored as Digital Editor of the Year by the 2018 Folio: Digital Awards.
As a health and science journalist, Carolyn is passionate about helping people better understand their bodies and feel their best. She recommitted SELF to a service-driven mission centered on the values of inclusivity, accuracy and empathy.
Prior to her current position, Carolyn served as executive digital director of SELF; under her leadership, Self.com went through a full redesign in 2016 and organic traffic grew 131% in one year, while offsite video views grew 210%. Before joining SELF, Kylstra was the health editor at BuzzFeed, where she launched the site’s Health vertical, and site director at Women’s Health.
