Closure of Theology Programs

After consultation with a broad range of stakeholders, in January 2014 the Dean of Arts and Science announced the temporary suspension of new admissions to the Theology programs Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies and Bachelor of Theology at Queen's University.

Since then, the School has continued to consult with a wide range of stakeholders. In so doing, it has become increasingly clear that the decline in enrolment numbers over the past decade is not temporary. The School's goals of providing a solid, challenging, fulfilling program to all students and of having a strong cohort of students contributing to the academic culture no longer seem possible.

Thus, in January 2015 the Dean initiated the Senate Policy and procedures for the closing of the Theology programs. (See this policy on the University Secretariat website.)

On 3 November, 2015, the Senate of Queen's University voted to close the Theology programs in the School of Religion effective immediately.

This closure will not adversely affect the vibrant and growing undergraduate and graduate programs in Religious Studies, and no regular faculty members or staff will lose their positions. All currently enrolled Theology students have plans to complete their degree programs.
