This is actually how the book starts out. I love that it starts out like this. Like you have found a long lost tome and are about to embark on a Never Ending Story-ish type of adventure. I'm also a sucker from historical fiction. This book is very well written and easy to follow. It's full of adventure, romance, and intrigue. It's also a clean romance so no matter the age, it can be read by anybody.
All of the characters, I thnk, are well rounded and fully developed. The two characters that the story mainly revolves around are Rafe and Adele. Rafe and Adele were betrothed when she was 2 years old and Rafe 12 years. Adele's family had just been murdered by her Uncle and to keep her safe and the king on the throne she was betrothed. Rafe is the son of the powerful family Valrek.
Sixteen years later, it is just about a month to their nuptuals. Rafe is worried that Adele's life may be in danger now that she is about to brought out in the open. He decides to travel by himself to get her and have his good friend Finan take his place in Merrodon where he is supposed to help two lords come to a satisfactory settlement. Thinking that no one would suspect him collecting his betrothed. He goes to get her and her companion Eda and they head out the next morning. The mistress that was taking care of Adele mistakenly assumes that Rafe is really his friend Finan and that carries over to Adele and Eda. Rafe says nothing to correct the mistake. He wants to use it to see how Adele will behave with a "regular" person. They are set upon their first day out and have to travel hastily after avoiding capture. Sleeping out in the open and eating over a campfire. Something that Adele has never done before, but looks at it as an adventure. When they arrive at Merrodon there are just more trials for them to overcome.

I really enjoyed this medieval story. It starts with Rafe going to bring his bethrothed to his home for safety. He's never met Adele, and wonders if he'll like her or if she'll like him, and with dangers mounting anyway, decides on an imperfect plan to go, but not as himself. He's more a man of action than words and starts to feel like he's messing things up. However, his question on if they'll simply like one another as themselves - without titles or feeling obligated to - gets answered. And it gets confusing, which is humorous.
What I really loved about the story is the fiercely loyal friendships among a group of honorable men. I grew to love and admire their dedication to each other. The plot has many turning points and a lot of political intrigue, which included memorable characters with different ways of approaching challenges.
The writing is well done... the viewpoint is third person omniscient, which works with this complex plot and cast. The struggle with this is the narrative viewpoint takes the time to switch continually to how each character reacts/feels/interprets a single event - which adds a lot of wonderful insight, but makes me constantly trying to follow whose head we're seeing inside of at the moment, paragraph by paragraph. I had to read more slowly than I'm used to so I could keep straight whose insight is on display at that moment. It felt tedious to read like that, as much as I liked seeing what they thought. I would have liked to "stay" with one mindset until a page break, where it switches to someone else's head.
I enjoyed the setting, loved the characters, the sweet romance, and how a relatively simple mission sets off a series of political intrigues, revenge, alliances, friendship loyalties being tested, and trying to avoid another horrible war when some are set on starting it.
