List of Highland clans
| During the 18th and 19th centuries, the clan system fell victim
to a combination of political and economic forces. Essentially bound
together by ties of kinship and the authority of the chief, the clans
paid a heavy price for their loyalty to the Jacobite cause. Approximately
2,000 clansmen were killed at the Battle of Culloden (1746), and afterwards
many Highland settlements were plundered and destroyed. This list
