Most of the clergy of the pontifical representations reside abroad and most of the cardinals in Rome. Thus, the actual resident population is considerably lower than the tabulated figures.
Beside core Vatican City, further buildings and plots of land (like Castel Gandolfo) are exterritorial properties of the Holy See; they do not belong to the territory of Vatican City. About 3,500 people reside in these buildings in 2011.
