About An Individual Account
Individual accounts enable independent researchers to access free JSTOR articles. Although they are intended for individuals who are unaffiliated with a school or library, these accounts also provide tools for all kinds of researchers, from students to scholars to independent historians, to save their work (and organize citations for projects, articles, and papers) directly on the JSTOR site.
To register you will need to:
- visit the registration page
- create a (unique) username and password
- provide an email
- provide your name
Play this short video to learn more about how to register for an individual account:
There will be an opportunity to keep yourself logged in and to sign up for news items from JSTOR and/or JSTOR-participating publishers. To opt-in to any of those, you'll need to check the corresponding checkbox. You can start on the registration page.
What you can do with an Individual account:
Individual accounts can help you with your research, whether you are a student with a access to an institutional subscription or an independent researcher:
- Read up to six articles a month online for free.
- Save your citations to My Workspace.
- Students who have access to JSTOR through their school can use an individual account to save their work.
- If you're a librarian, you'll need an individual account to manage your usage statistics.
- If you ever decide you want to buy a JPASS or an individual article, you can use the same individual account.
