Architecture and History

The building of the Belvedere 21 is an architectural icon of post-war Modernism. Constructed by Karl Schwanzer for the 1958 Brussels World Expo, it was reinstalled in the Viennese Schweizer Garten. Since 1962 it was used for exhibitions, as the Museum of the Twentieth Century. After reconstruction today it is the venue for contemporary Austrian and international art, film, and music.

Artothek des Bundes / Wotruba Depot / Blickle Kino

Artothek des Bundes

The Republic of Austria has acquired over 37,000 works of art since 1948, including early works by now-established artists as well as some very contemporary pieces. The Artothek des Bundes collects and administers these works, thereby providing a comprehensive documentation of modern and contemporary Austrian art. In 2012 the Belvedere took over the administration of the collection, now located at the Belvedere 21. Selected works are presented to the public in exhibitions or are on permanent loan in Austrian museums.

Wotruba Depot

Fritz Wotruba is known as one of the most influential Austrian sculptors of the 20th century. The Fritz Wotruba Private Foundation at the Belvedere 21 administers his extensive artistic and documentary estate. In the Wotruba Depot, you will find stone and bronze sculptures as well as plaster models. The study room gives you access to drawings and prints, the artist's written estate, the photo archive, and the library.

Blickle Kino

The Blickle Kino at the Belvedere 21 is the only wholly intact cinema from the 1950s in Vienna. The generous support of Ursula Blickle allowed for the renovation of this extraordinary cinema, which architect Karl Schwanzer designed initially as part of the World Exhibition Pavilion in Brussels. Today, the Blickle Kino meets all cinematic standards and features a variety of programs, including the Blickle Archive Series.

Avoid waiting times

It is busiest between 11 am and 2 pm. We know how frustrating long waits can be and therefore advise you to plan your visit at an off-peak time. The Upper Belvedere opens at 9 am and on Fridays stays open until 9 pm.

 

 

Seating / Wheelchairs

There is some seating in the exhibition rooms. A wheelchair is available for visitors with mobility access requirements.

 

 

Visitors with children

  • It is our pleasure to welcome adults, youths and children to our museum.
  • Parents and guardians are responsible for the behaviour of children and youths.
 

Cloakrooms

  • It is not allowed to enter the museum with outer wear and bulky items such as umbrellas, rucksacks, travel bags and other bulky items. All such items may be deposited at the cloakroom. 
  • There are lockers (free of charge).
  • It is not possible to deposit suitcases.

In the Upper Belvedere Audio guides are available in: German, English, French, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish.

Lost property

Lost property can be collected at the cloakroom ,valuables at the security office. 

 

 

Photography

  • Photographing and filming in the museum is allowed for private, non-commercial purposes, without the use of flash, tripods or selfie-sticks, as long as the integrity of the exhibits is guaranteed.
  • Excluded from this are rooms,
    exhibitions or individual exhibits marked as having a ban on photography. 
  • You can apply for a permit to film or take photos for academic or reporting purposes from our communications department.

 

 

Eat & Drink

It is forbidden to carry and consume food and beverages in any of our exhibition rooms. Our museum cafés offer a rich variety of food and drinks. 

 

 

In the Exhibition Rooms

  • It is not allowed to touch or in any other way cause damage to exhibits.
  • We kindly ask you to refrain from using your mobile phone or talking loudly in the exhibition rooms to avoid disturbing other visitors. 
  • Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the museum.
  • Animals (except guide dogs) are not allowed to be taken into the museum.
