Vienna 2020. Capital of Music
Vienna and music – they belong together. The focus in 2020 is on those artists and institutions that make Vienna the world capital of music. Now and in the future. It started long ago, for example with Ludwig van Beethoven, whose 250th birthday will be celebrated in 2020. He was a “musical Viennese by choice” – having chosen Vienna as the focal point of his life and creativity. Like him, world stars of the present have chosen Vienna as their special place of music. Billy Joel, Juya Wang, Hans Zimmer and Joshua Bell are just some of today’s Viennese by choice. They draw on the valuable tradition that lives on in Vienna and appreciate the innovative powers that the creative music scene is now unleashing.
Vienna bursts into bloom – Spring 2020
It’s easy to enjoy the green of springtime in Vienna – after all, green spaces account for almost half of the urban area. These include 280 imperial parks as well as the large recreational areas in and around the city. Other than that, Vienna has all sorts of open-air pleasures to offer in spring and early summer – from the “Schanigarten” outdoor seating areas in front of cafés to the opera experience under a canopy of stars.

Backhausen
Emperors and kings once surrounded themselves with the fine damasks, brocades and Gobelins made by Backhausen. They decorated their reception rooms with luxurious fabrics and designs, receiving heads of state from all over the globe. In 1888, the company Johann Backhausen & Söhne was awarded the title “k. u. k. Hoflieferant” – supplier to the Habsburg imperial household – around 70 years after Franz Backhausen began manufacturing ladies’ coats and jackets with 40 handlooms.
Inspired by the spirit of the Fin de Siècle, Backhausen worked with the great artists of the Wiener Werkstätte: Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser , Dagobert Peche and many more well- known members of this artistic community created impressive designs that Johann Backhausen & Söhne wove into avantgarde textiles. The magnificent original designs can be found today in the company’s design archive, which is protected as part of Austria’s heritage.
In 2014, Dr. Louise Kiesling acquired Backhausen and became its Creative Director. She has given the company’s traditional corporate image a new, clear vision for the future. The weaving factory at Hoheneich, in the heart of Austria’s Waldviertel region, has not only been strengthened, but will be maintained as an important industrial site and grow as a centre for textiles know-how well into the future.
Backhausen has presented a number of new collections in the years since the takeover, binding the company’s existing and new values ever closer. The use of high-quality natural fibres – most notably in the wool collections LANA, STIRLING and URBAN – is a clear statement of quality and sustainability. Added to this is a multitude of new creative processes stemming from the continuous partnership with the artistic avantgarde. All this strengthens Backhausen’s position as a traditional company with a secure view of the future.

Kunsthistorisches Museum
The Kunsthistorisches Museum was built in 1891 near the Imperial Palace to house the extensive collections of the imperial family. With its vast array of eminent works and the largest Bruegel collection in the world, it is considered one of the most eminent museums in the world.
Numerous major art works of European art history, among them Raphael’s “Madonna in the Meadow,” Vermeer’s “The Allegory of Painting,” the Infanta paintings by Velazquez, masterworks by Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer, Titian and Tintoretto are housed in the paintings gallery. The Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection contains fascinating treasures from mysterious cultures long past.
The Kunstkammer Vienna (Chamber of art and wonders) with rarities from the former treasure chambers and cabinets of curiosities of the Habsburgs opened again in March 2013. The collection is one of the most significant of its kind in the world and displays precious artworks from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque era. The highlights are the collection of Emperor Kaiser Rudolf II, the exotica complex and the famous “Saliera”.
The architectural mirror image of the Kunsthistorisches Museum is the Museum of Natural History on the opposite side, which was also built according to designs by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer.
