Patrick Skinner

@SkinnerPm

took a while but I’ve made my way from overseas intel/counterterrorism work to being a local cop in my home town. I’m a truly terrible twitter follow.

Well. There’s this. Me in the New Yorker. Easily the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. But I wanted to highlight local policing done with a great group of colleagues. But yeah, this is terrifying.

Home. ‘Twas a grind for sure. Colleagues and I were all uncharacteristically tired to start this stretch of three shifts. Just tired. Meh. But we ground out the calls and got home. Now it’s a quick field trip for the pups, then MeanCat ambush, and then some sleep.

We were imprisoned with MeanCat inside all day while an awesome local wife-and-husband fencing firm redid another stretch of the fence. Now I need to get a burning moat to keep MeanCat in the yard and off the front porch WHERE HE IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT SUPPOSED TO BE

Ahahahaha. MeanCat fell asleep while looking out the window and plotting. Head against the glass sleeping.

So I’m deep asleep and there’s this anti-subtle punch punch punch to my head. It’s the Baked Potato and his latest stupid boney. He’s been carrying it around for a day. Needs me to lift the covers so he can nest properly. Where is the AI-robotic future when I need it??

Of all of nature’s battles, none are as fierce or intense as the battle of the Baked Potato & the covers. In late October, when the temperature drops to a chilly sub-80 degrees, the ridiculous baked potato punches not just the elements but me to get under the covers to nest

And do the 1% of super scary criminals think they’ve gotten over on softy skinner who gave them Gatorade or a smoke even while they’re in handcuffs? Maybe, probably. Who cares. I don’t. I’m not a cartoon character. I don’t work for the scary 1%. . I work for the 99%.

Most neighbors are decent, even the ones that do dumb or criminal stuff. There are monsters among us. There are. I’m just not going to interact with the 99% like they’re the 1%. So I wave to defendants & ask how they’re doing. I’m not a Punisher. I’m a goofy neighbor.

All this is to say that I work for my neighbors whoever they are. And that if you find this all sanctimonious or cloying then go somewhere else, with your punisher or ‘300’ tough-guy delusions. I’ve seen up close what we called tough. That ain’t tough. This is. Be kind. Every day

Possibly my favorite moment so far as a local beat cop. In court, after getting sworn in, the defendant and I giggle-wave at each other. We weren’t jerks in the time that led to all this and we aren’t jerks now. Helps me remember to hate the crime and not the criminal.

I dare say the whole point of being a local cop is the honest & happy embrace of the limits of authority. And to gain the trust of neighbors that we will all work within those limits. Transparently. All the better to spot and focus on the few that commit crimes against us all.

I love the limits of authority. I love capable defense attorneys speaking for defendants no one else is speaking for. I also love helping crime victims & the state. & the best thing is I see all of that as same side of same coin. We all matter or none of us do. I love/hate court

I make mistakes all the time. I can barely tie my own shoes. So I pay attention to case law highlighted by senior officers, what the courts say and why, and then pay attention in court to other cases. On the street, it gets odd but a lot of errors are unforced so reduce those...

Sitting in the back watching a public defense attorney just maul some cases is always a teachable moment to slow down, know the law, know the LIMITS of the law, & then write solid reports. I actually spoke w/ her afterwards & asked her some questions on searches. It’s a cool job

Oh, day off court where it falls apart & I’m again not needed, you remain my one true love. But got to watch a public defender just shred some cases. She was awesome. Makes me aware of doing my job better. I love the law & I love the limits of the law as it applies to the state.

Generalissimo Baked Potato surveys the battlefield from the Groany Heights during Operation ‘Dance of the New Boneys’ that has consumed the pups now for two days. So many feints and attacks. So much drama. So much bone stealing.

Does anyone seriously doubt the smart phones and emails of the elected alleged adults who went into the SCIF for a political stunt aren’t owned by foreign intel? These officials will click on any phish bait that has a frog or a flag. Foreign intel 101. But the memes etc etc etc

Are we really so enthralled with the genius of people who count dead people as users and sell every bit of private information you’re foolish enough to give them that we now ask them for social and political guidance? These people couldn’t talk their way out of a bathroom
