Orson Welles (1915-1985)
Actor, director, writer and producer across film, television and radio, Orson Welles was a formidable talent throughout the era. He championed personal creativity over studio systems, meaning his films often became the victim of heavy editing. Esteemed classic Citizen Kane (1941), The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) and Touch of Evil (1958) all need no introduction. Other notable starring roles include The Lady from Shanghai (1948 - he also directed), The Long Hot Summer (1958) and Compulsion (1959).
