The preliminary 2019 population estimates are based on the results of the 2013 census but reflect the 2018 census population distribution. Thus, they strongly differ from the 2018 estimates. The urban areas Kumeu-Huapai, Lake Hayes, Pegasus and Pokeno show a high population growth compared to 2013.

The 2018 New Zealand census reports a usually resident population count of 4,699,755. This number does not consider underenumeration and residents temporarily overseas.
